Bad Times for Benny

Regarding Ben Sheets, I can't say that I'm shocked.

Lord, it appears that he and his agent screwed the pooch on this one. Though what would have happened if he accepted arbitration but was broken at the time of the hearing?

I actually feel bad for Sheets. There, I said it. It's kind of how I felt when Jack Ikegwanu (I know I didn't spell that right) tore his knee up after declaring for the draft - piling unfortunate luck on top of questionable decisions.

That Will Leave A Mark

Well, now we know why the Texas-Sheets marriage hasn't come to fruition. Man, I hope we don't have to pay for another surgery for this guy...

According to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy and T.R. Sullivan, Ben Sheets has a torn flexor tendon in his elbow that might require surgery. There is some debate as to whether the Brewers would have to pay for the procedure. The Rangers and Sheets agreed to a two-year deal last week, but the physical threw a wrench into it. GM Jon Daniels says he's not optimistic at this point.

The injury first surfaced late in the '08 season, but until Sheets' physical with the Rangers it was thought that rehab would be sufficient.

Thanks to Chad for the hook up.

Obviously, He's Tempting

Generally, I like Adam McAlvy's work. So I was tempted to not even post this. But what the hell, it's been a slow winter.

In this story, which by my count is update #3,294 this offseason about how the Brewers won't be re-signing Ben Sheets, McAlvy writes the following:

Yet it is tempting to keep in mind that Sheets has pitched for the Brewers his entire career, and could be tempted to return if he does not find any attractive offers elsewhere. In Milwaukee he would be the team's No. 1 starter and would add depth to a rotation that currently has precious little. Brewers officials say they want to preserve payroll flexibility to make a move once the season starts, but the opportunity to land Sheets at a bargain price could be tempting.

It's a great label for Ben Sheets, actually.

Temptress.

Sheets Chatter

Via MLB Trade Rumors, a Mets blog is reporting that Ben Sheets is asking for 2 years, $18 million with a 3rd year option and incentives. The Mets want to do a Brad Penny-type deal, with a low guaranteed amount and a bunch of incentives.

If this is true, there has to be something seriously wrong with Sheets' health, to the point that he is not confident about pitching a lot in 2009, doesn't there? Why else wouldn't he go for a 1-year deal to re-establish his value? Why would he want an extra year at $9 m/year, when he turned down arbitration which would have netted him in the ballpark of $13 m for next year?

The only answer that makes sense to me is he wants more guaranteed money ($18 m vs. $13 m) because he isn't sure he can pitch a lot in 2009. Or maybe his agent screwed up by telling him to decline arbitration. Or maybe a combination of the two.

I know lots of fans want the Brewers to bring Sheets back, and part of me does too, but do we want to deal with this again?

Why Is This Even A Question?

This seems like a no-brainer to me, but scribes, including Ken Rosenthal and Tom Haudricourt, are wondering whether the Brewers will offer salary arbitration to Ben Sheets today.

Reasons why I think you offer him arbitration:
  • He probably won't accept arbitration.
  • If they don't offer arbitration, the Brewers give up two high draft picks.
  • If he accepts, they have Sheets on a 1-year deal at an estimated $13 or $14 million. I'm down with a 1-year deal for Sheets.
  • If he accepts and the Brewers don't want him, they could always trade him - I'm sure there are teams that would want Sheets on a 1-year deal for a reasonable (pitching-wise, anyway) salary.

If they don't offer him arbitration, the only rational explanation is that there is something major going on with his elbow.

Disagree?

UPDATE:

Haudricourt is reporting that the Brewers offered arbitration to Sabathia, Sheets and Shouse. This makes sense to me.

No More Wood in Chicago

Cub-dom is in mourning, as the Cubs have announced that they won't re-sign Kerry Wood.

It's odd that by and large, Cubs fans have such an affinity to the oft-injured Wood while most Brewers fans are telling the oft-injured Ben Sheets to not let the door hit him on the way out of town.

Perhaps it is because Wood seemed to work his ass off to get back from his injuries, while the perception (right or wrong) was that Sheets got these weird injuries because he was lazy in his conditioning. The fact that Wood signed for a perceived hometown discount last year helped too, I'd guess.

Anyway, add one more name to the closer pool, and take one away, as the Cubs traded for Kevin Gregg today.

Debate

Good question by Garcia that deserves its own post.

Choose one:
A durable Suppan @ $10 million per year: or,

An often injured Sheets @ $13 million per year?

I bumped the Sheets amount up to make it more interesting.

Sheets Has a Hamstring Pull In His Forearm

Buster Olney (via MLBTraderumors.com) exchanged emails with Ben Sheets' agent Casey Close, who had this to say about Sheeter's latest injury.

"His forearm muscle [strain] was the equivalent of a hamstring pull and it simply needed time to rest. No real treatment was needed. He's fine and should be 100 percent in a month."

100% in a month? Maybe. 100% next September? Riiiiiiiiiiiight.

My Condo's On Fire - Anybody Hungry?

Apparently, someone tried to smoke Ben Sheets out of his condo, perhaps to encourage him to pitch this week rather than following his usual routine of ending the season injured? (This is pure conjecture on my part).

Alas, if by causing the building to be evacuated they were trying to make him go over to Miller Park to work out, they didn't succeed, as he went to Mo's instead for a steak. Typical.

Road Trip - Miller Park South

I was invited to attend the Brewers - Cubs game last night in Wrigley Field. It occurred to me...that i haven't done a running diary of sorts in almost a year (back on my old site). So, with that in mind, and realizing that this could have some serious potential, I took notes the entire trip to and back from Wrigley. Before we get to that, here is a prologue to my current mental state before said trip:
On Monday, I arrive at my office and sit down at my desk. It is then I discover a sewer-like odor. Looking around for the culprit, I eventually realize it is myself. Well...my shirt that is. I've been warned before about leaving clothes in the washer after it's done for too long. I learned that the hard way Monday. I stunk like salty bananas. I couldn't go home to change my shirt...so I basically avoided people all day and hung out in my own stench.
On Tuesday, I thought I was going to have a heart attack at work due to stress. I've been known to take things a little too much to heart. I actually had to take a 10 minute walk to calm down. I was able to calm down a little after work by reading the works of this guy...but watching the Brewer game eventually led to more sorrow.
So you can see...if the Brewers don't win on Wednesday, I'm going to be in poor shape...on to the circus:
338 pm - I leave DT Milwaukee to head to the Chicago...or as I prefer to call it...the Sixth level of hell. I have a sub with me, a tin of chew, and several CD's. I'm hoping to get to where I was meeting the other guy I was with by 6.
430 pm - I see a sign close to the border that says 51 miles to Chicago. I think to myself..."Great! I'll be there in under an hour! (HA)"
436 pm - Stopped at a toll. There is a taxi in front of me. A question I pondered...if you are in a taxi, who pays for the toll? The driver or passenger?
438 pm - I hide no shame for my utter disdain of Illinois. When I crossed the border a few minutes back a shudder actually went down my spine, as I entered the unholy land. As I pass Six Flags, I see a sign that says, "Milwaukee Ave," and for a while I actually felt at ease remembering my cozy city. This feeling quickly evaporates however, when I realize that we're in a 45 mph zone...and there is nobody going below 78 mph. What a state.
541 pm - Deep in the stuck in traffic game. We pass Cicero Ave, and I couldn't help but wonder if this road was named after the Roman Senator/Orator/Coward. Cicero was known for deceit, cowardice, and a lack of fortitude. I decide I like using those words to describe Illinois and it's inhabitants.
615pm - Arive at the parking lot and hop on the El. Pull up to Wrigley. Cool shit.
630pm - Scene a lot different then Miller Park North. Guys are trying to pawn off shirts to me that say "Cubtober" and "Obama/Fukudome 08."
645pm - Inside the stadium. I go up to order beers (Old Style...are you kidding me?). As a 25 year old male, I anticipate no problems with this. I hand the vendor my ID. He says, "sorry sir, but I can't serve you." At first I thought he was joking with me because I'm from WI but that wasn't the case. My card was one of those cards I got 6 years ago that say "Under 21 until X." Apparently in IL, there is a statute that states NOBODY can be served beer with that sort of ID. Even if that ID is valid and not expired (like in my case). They seriously will not serve beer to people of age. Ladies and gentleman: Billups of the Week, the Illinois State Legislature!
646pm - Walking back disgusted, this female Cubs fan SCREAMS at me: "HEY...WHERE's NED YOST?" I shrug and say something like, "probably in his garden." She responds: "HE's PUNCHING SOME POLAR BEARS!" I look at her like she's an alien and walk away, dumbfounded.
720pm - 1st inning with Prince up with the bases juiced, I announce that I just want 2 runs to score...that's it. No more. When he rips his double, I go nuts and the crowd goes silent. I'm wearing my Fielder jersey. As I stand and clap, "I hear softly, "It's over for you...don't you understand."
758pm - In the 3rd inning I see Mark DeFelice in the game. I open my mouth...saying some choice words for Mr. Ben Sheets that revolved around lack of genitalia. I later find out he has some sort of arm injury...which relaxes me a little because at least that is legitimate. Anybody still think we should sign him again? Anybody? He's a lemon.
835pm - Rally chew. Soriano's up with a runner on 2nd with 2 outs. Let's go.
836pm - Nice try Soriano.
850pm - Kendall on 3rd with 1 out after getting a 3 second jump on a steal from first to second and then a passed ball on the same play. Brad Nelson (batting at the time) strikes fear into the souls of the Cubs' pitching staff with a solid walk.
852pm - Again, I just want 1 run. Just 1. Runners on 1st & 3rd 1 out. Just 1.
855pm - K bye. Brewers September in a nutshell. Still up 3-1 though.
918pm - Biggest sigh of relief I've had in a while. Braun, Fielder, Hardy, & Hart all get on base consecutively, with Hart actually getting a base hit again. I feel good. Relaxed.
930pm - OMG...Eric Gagne is coming into the game. I bow my head in agony. People around me are laughing hysterically. "You guys really don't want to win do you?" "Why are you putting him in? You don't want to make the Playoffs do you?" "I guess you guys want to play extra innings!"
935pm - Eric Gagne is the man.
944pm - Prince is up to his last at-bat. I think it's the 9th. People are calling him, "Skittles" and "Milky Way." A guy about 10 rows back yells, "SERIOUSLY, HIT HIM!" I chuckled.
1012pm - Ship the Victory. There will be no "Go Cubs Go" blasting on the damn speakers. I hate that song. It's eerily silent walking out of the stadium and I'm highfiving other Brewer fans. I point this out to the guy I was with (Cubs fan) several times just so he's aware.
1025pm - Stuck in a pool of Cubbie Blue waiting to get back on the EL. A fan tries to get a "8 games back" chant going. It doesn't start up.
1026pm - Still waiting. A guy a few people behind me says, "Seriously, they shouldn't even let the Brewers fans on. They are just a waste of space."

At that point, I called it quits with the notes. That comment is about as classy as it gets.

Excellent time. Spent about 5 combined hours driving last night...but it was worth it.

Problem Solved

So Ben Sheets has an owie that he's been hiding from us. Given his history, we all know that he won't pitch again this year.

“There’s been really good days. There’s been really bad days. There’s been days that it’s hard to move and it’s stiff, then the next day it’s free.”

I have a solution. When Sheets has one of his "really good days", he pitches that night. Bump the guy who is supposed to start that evening and go with Sheets. Hell, the guy only threw 24 pitches last night, so if he feels really good tomorrow, he pitches.

I'm sure Sheets will go along with this. He is a gamer.

Work Them Like Rented Mules

Great to open up the post All Star Break (if that game's finally over) with CC and Benny. I say we pitch the titties off those guys, let somebody else deal with the arm problems next year.

Quick Poll

If you were the Brewers GM, would you sign Ben Sheets at the end of this year to a 5 year, $88 Million dollar guaranteed money deal?

Would you? Go ahead and go on record.

Ben Sheets is the best pitcher ever!

Is Ben Sheets the best pitcher in the NL? How about the entire major leagues? Hey...if Ned Yost says he is...it's got to be true!

"Oh yeah, no doubt," Yost said, adding Sheets is the best of "anybody in baseball, in both leagues."

Stamp it! He's the best!

In all seriousness, I do believe Sheets can be the best pitcher in baseball on any given day. I just think it's funny the way Yost portrays it.

The big question now is the All-Star Game. Does Sheets warrant the start? Eh what the hell...why not. He'll be a Yankee next year anyway...he might as well introduce himself to the crowd.

Just your basic update...

Everybody remember this Michael Huntish post by Brad? Tee Hee...seems like a long time ago...

Watching Ben Sheets dominate YET AGAIN last night...I couldn't help but briefly think about "what could have been" last year. He missed 10 starts...and the Brewers were out of the playoffs by 2 games...I'm just sayin...

Anybody find any articles out there about Laynce Nix getting a DUI? It was mentioned in passing here and I can't find a full story. I dig his quote though...

Nix has disputed the charge. "I passed the field sobriety tests and no way was I impaired," he told the Nashville Tennessean.

What...they don't have cabs in Nashville? Come on Laynce!

And finally, the crew goes up against a rookie name Charlie Morton tonight, who is making I believe his 3rd start in the bigs. If history holds true, he will pitch 7 and 1/3 of 2 hit ball against the crew, who seem to like giving rookie pitchers confidence by laying down.

Time to roll through Atlanta like Sherman.

Rumblings...

Can't fire Ned now...this team is butter!

These are the games/teams that the Brewers are supposed to win/beat. I'm not looking past today's game...but the Nationals are another team the Brewers need to whoop up on. 3 out of 4 there is a must as well before the team comes back to Milwaukee. You can almost hear Braun pumping up the guys in the clubhouse before these games..."We need to kick their ass...it's the freaking Pirates for crying out loud...sit dead red on a fastball and let's own these chumps!"

How good is Ben Sheets? Seriously. Guy is just a stud and is head over heals better then every other Brewer pitcher. Take a good look at the stats. Innings pitched. Strikeouts v Walks. ERA. It gets old mentioning but it needs to be reiterated: without him the Brewers would be terrible instead of painfully average.

Can we just cut the crap and call Salomon Torres the closer? I mean come on. The guy is lights out out of the pen this year. Nope...don't want to Ned? Why? Here's why:
"Probably, he will get the majority of the closing situations," Yost said. "But if I don't have to, I don't like to paint myself into a corner. If I want to bring in Shouse, I don't [want to] get 90 questions on why Torres didn't pitch."
Stop thinking Ned. Just know this. Torres can go an inning plus. If it's in the 8th and we are up, bring Torres in the nail the game down. That's all I'm saying man. K bye Gagne...enjoy your 10 million you billups.

Bill Hall and his putrid OBP (.286!!!!) are finally done as the everyday 3rd baseman. I refuse to do the Bill Hall chant ever again until he gets his OBP over .300. I'm sorry, that's my breaking point. Get ready for...another Craig Counsell platoon! Yes! My only question is: Is Russell the Muscle not even being considered if this platoon is for real? Guy is owning souls in Triple A to the tune of a 1.151 OPS! Get him up here! Is it not even worth a shot?!

Game Report - Brewers 10 Cubs 7

This game would have been a blowout if not for Torres' little gas can performance in the 7th...or if we would have gotten more with bases loaded no outs with Braun and Fielder up (only 1 run). I'm not complaining. Check out the box score:This has to be the first time all year 4 different guys had 3 hits.

Sheets didn't look good...but somehow he was able to labor through 5. Apparently that was the most walks he ever let up his entire career. The big news is that he doesn't feel any pain....or does he?

"I think I'm going to feel all right (Wednesday)," said Sheets, who allowed three hits and four runs (three earned) while logging only two strikeouts in the Brewers' 10-7 victory over the Cubs. "I ain't saying I'm in the clear but I think I'll be OK."

So what the hell does that mean? That sounds to me like a quote from a guy who has no idea how his arm is going to react when he wakes up this morning. The Crew hasn't lost this year in Sheets' 5 starts...please just get 25 more out of him. That's all I want. I'm not greedy.

Also, what was the deal with that umpire hurting himself?
My buddies and I couldn't figure it out and now it looks like they are keeping the injury hush hush. I was laying 15 to 1 that the guy was gonna end up dead. Nobody took it.

Time for a sweep and the division lead.

He's done

Ben Sheets has pitched his last game for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Ok...that may be a bit of an exaggeration. Maybe it really is just "soreness." Maybe he won't miss more than "one start." Maybe he really doesn't have an "unusually large vagina."

Would you want to take a bet that he only misses one start? I sure as hell wouldn't.

But man...does he really have say stuff like this?

"If it was September, I would be out there," Sheets said. "I'm pretty sure I'm capable of pitching right now."

Really man??? Did you really just say that? September? You're gonna talk about September??? Do you have a short-term memory problem? Did you not bow out of your last 3-4 starts last September with a "hamstring injury???" Just shut your mouth Ben...and get back to the rotation ASAP ok? I don't want to hear you talk about anything else. Please.

Ben Sheets has given Brewer fans over the last 3 years more cases of blue balls than your basic high school prom queen. He teases...he looks good...he's about ready to push you over the top with excitement!...then he stops. He goes home. He's tired. He's hurt. You're resolved to chasing down one of the members of the comedy sportz team hoping she can help (ie...Dave Bush). She's into you sure...she can get the job done...but it's just not the same. You're left alone wishing what could have been.

Mmmm...Bratwurst

A funny from CBSSportsline:

8. Milwaukee's Ben Sheets leaves his Friday start after five innings: And in a related story equally as shocking, bratwurst is really, really popular in Wisconsin. At least the Brewers got Yovanni Gallardo back Sunday. Maybe he's not a household name yet, but he is really, really good. Just as good as bratwurst. Well, almost.

Important News Story

Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your attention. I've just been handed an urgent and horrifying news story. I need all of you to stop what you're doing and listen.

Cannonbal....err...Ben Sheets left tonight's game with tightness in his triceps.

As a point of comparison, the Angels' John Lackey was diagnosed with a triceps strain in mid-March, and he's not expected back until at least mid-May. 2 months.

Joe Borowski recently went on the DL with a triceps strain - he's expected to miss 2-4 weeks.

Outstanding.
