Derrick Turnblow Blurb
Apparently there's a must read in the current version of Sports Illustrated. It's contains excerpts from a new book coming out from a former Angels Minor League "player" named Matt McCarthy. I put quotes around "player" because it seems like this guy only had 1 year in the minors.
Anyway, a good post was written covering the entire piece over at Midwest Sports Fans...which used it to write an adoration post on Bobby Jenks, who apparently was covered a lot in the book.
The post is long, but definitely not a wombat...so check it out. For our purposes though on our fine site, we'd like to point out some of the tidbits mentioned regarding one of old punching bags, Mr. Derrick Turnblow. Here's a piece from the book (pulled from Midwest Sports), chronicling a training room event back in the day between the author (McCarthy), Jenks, and Turnblow. Enjoy.
“What are you reading about?” I asked.
“Me,” he said flatly. “Everybody’s got something to f—–g say about Bobby Jenks. One day I’m an alcoholic; the next day I’m the second coming of Christ.” I laughed awkwardly, trying to think of how I would describe him. “I’m a damn bargain is what I am,” he continued as he rolled onto his stomach. “Hundred-and-seventy-five-thousand dollars for a guy with my s–t?
“And what do they do? They send me to this hellhole with guys who don’t belong in pro ball.” It wasn’t a stretch to imagine he was talking about guys like me.
“How many guys can throw a hundred miles an hour?” he asked me as he tossed the magazine on the floor.
“Probably a dozen,” I offered.
“How many guys on this planet can throw a ball a hundred miles an hour?” he said in a much louder voice as he sat up.
“I can think of one,” said a large man with shoulder-length brown hair as he sauntered into the room and calmly submerged himself in a vat of ice. It was Angels reliever Derrick Turnbow, in Mesa on a rehab assignment. A year earlier he had suffered a displaced fracture of the ulna while throwing one of his 100-mph fastballs.
“Now, I can’t say that I’ve ever seen you hit triple digits,” Bobby said playfully.
“Go to hell, Jenks,” Turnbow said…”Talk to me when you’ve pitched a game in the big leagues.”
Good times in the minor leagues! So there's Turnbow, on rehab...big leaguing Jenks (who at the time can only be described as a lazy punk with talent) after Jenks talks trash to him. Apparently Jenks wasn't done with Turnblow however. According to the excerpts:
According to McCarthy, Jenks called out then-Angels farmhand Derrick Turnbow for being “so ‘roided out, it’s ridiculous.” Turnbow, of course, would later become both an All Star and the first Major Leaguer to be publicly identified as having tested positive for steroids.
Ahhh...so there you have it. The legend of Derrick Turnblow continues to grow. It's funny to think back about the fall and rise and subsequent fall of this guy. Roid user. Down and out. Has a ridiculous year out of nowhere in 2005. Makes the all star team in 06 before IMPLODING in the 2nd half. Decent in 07 but faltered down the stretch with too many walks and becomes a fan punching bag. Injured in 08, and now followed Mike Maddox to the Rangers like a little puppy dog. What will the next chapter of his strange career look like? As Kent Brockman would say...only time...will tell.

There is apparently some sort of sweepstakes that teams are participating in to secure the services of one Derrick Turnbow.
MLB Trade Rumors tells us that the "finalists" for Turnbow are the Pirates, the Marlins, and a mystery team.
Ooooooo! I like mysteries. God I hope he ends up in Pittsburgh.

Stretching Him Out to be a Starter?
Latest Nasville Sounds game recap. I'll pull out the most interesting nugget:
Derrick Turnbow started for the Sounds and worked two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while walking two batters and striking out three.
I'm not sure what I find most surprising in that sentence - that Turnbow started the damn game, or that he only gave up two walks in the two innings. A 1.5 WHIP? Good work Derrick!

Thank God. The over/under has been set at 2.5 years for when he gets arrested for dealing blow in Kansas.

Turnbow - Going the Extra Mile
"Anybody see the strikezone," asks Turnbow?
Only one word/picture describes Derrick Turnbow these days. Screw Gas Can. Hindenburg doesn't do him justice. Ditto for Oil Tanker. How about Chernobyl. Yes, he's contaminating entire regions of countries right now. Add Suppan's terrible outing and you have a full fledged emergency evacuation situation.
As outstanding as Doug Melvin has been in Milwaukee, he can't keep Turnbow on the roster. He just can't. He is not a major league pitcher at this point. It took him 43 pitches to record 2 outs last night, raising his ERA to a points-per-game-like 15.63.

Welcome Back...
Good lord.
There were several homecomings tonight at Miller Park....
1. The Brewers welcomed back Geoff Jenkins - and he didn't disappoint, striking out once and doing one of his patented I-don't-have-to-dive-for-this-ball-but-I-want-to-get-on-Sportscenter plays in right field.
2. The Brewers welcomed back Prince Fielder - a couple of 2-run bombs for the big fella. The best part was him mouthing "No Meat" to the camera after the second dinger.
3. The Brewers welcomed back...Derrick Turnbow? Although I was ready to reach through the TV screen to wring Ned's neck on that decision, Turnbow did the job in the 9th for the save. Yost said after the game that he had made his mind up before the game, that depending upon where the Phillies were in the lineup, if there was a save situation it would be Turnbow or Shouse to close. Nothing if not decisive...
Everyone will be second-guessing a couple of Yost decisions in this game, but how about how Charlie Manuel handled Cole Hamels? Hamels was well over 100 pitches to start the 8th, and the Phillies have the best bullpen in the league. After Braun doubled, I'm really surprised that Hamels stayed in the game to face Prince. That turned out to be a mistake.
Well, any time you can have Dave Bush, Mitch Stetter and Derrick Turnbow pitch in a game against Cole Hamels and you come out with a victory, it's a good day. But I could really use an 8-2 game one of these days...oh, and Trenni was out with guns blazing tonight...
Oh, and there was sort of a Steve Bartman moment in the early going, when Greg Dobbs hit a foul ball down the third base line and some yahoo stuck his glove over the railing and stole the ball from Bill Hall. Except this yahoo was wearing a Packers T-shirt, and Hall (who doesn't pee on his hands) didn't jump up and down and throw a hissy, and Bush got Dobbs to fly out to right so it didn't matter, and the game was in April. So I guess it wasn't all that similar to the Bartman play.
Quite a bit going on for a Wednesday night game in April, actually.

St Louis 6, Milwaukee 1
Jack Clark was sweet!
- Hey, look! It's beard night in St Louis. Looper, Prince, Gross, Bush, and Franklin all sporting the facial hair. And get this...ZZ Top performed the National Anthem! I made that last sentence up.
- Bush pitched just good enough to get a couple more starts. That's bad news for Brewers fans.
- Does Ned really expect to generate offense with Gross and Dillon batting 2 and 3? Dillon did look good, though. However, for some reason, Gross got the start in CF over Kapler who's hitting about .800 this year.
- And why was Braun off? He just had an off day to clear his head yesterday.
- Prince showing patients with 4 walks...I like it! Mix in a bacon cheeseburger Big Poppa.
- Turnbow - stick a fork in him, he's done. If he never pitches another inning with the Crew, it will be too soon.
- That bully looks worse and worse every day....except for Shousy.
- Big one tomorrow. I see a Villy bouncing back with a nice outing after getting roughed up by the Mets last weekend.

Brewers Staff - Post Yo
The Brewers have an interesting decision to make when Yo Gallardo comes off the DL, either this weekend or after one more start at Nashville.
If the Brewers are going on pure numbers rather than other intangible factors (e.g. grittiness, bulldog mentality, etc.) Dave Bush is gone from the rotation. No matter how many times he and Ned say that he hasn't pitched bad so far this season the results say that he's been terrible.
But what to do with Bush? Tom Haudricourt talked about this a little bit in one of his recent blogs. They could move Bush to AAA, assuming he clears waivers. Or, they could put Bush in long relief and get rid of Seth McClung.
One thing that Haudricourt mentioned that I considered as a possibility too is that Turnbow might have some trade value somewhere. Certain teams like the Tigers and Mets would appear to really need a bullpen arm. Turnbow certainly has an arm - it's just that he doesn't know where the hell the arm is going to throw the ball a lot of the time. Perhaps a change in scenery would do him some good. It just seems like he's (finally) not in the good graces of the coaching staff given his lack of appearances in any high leverage situations thus far this year.
So there you go. I'm making up the rumor that Turnbow is (or should be) available in a trade.
