God Bless The CFL

Love the CFL. It's even more awesome after this: After scoring the first CFL touchdown of the new season, a player for the Toronto Rocket Ismails took off his helmet, jersey, and shoulder pads - laid down in the end zone and mimicked being buried. Why? A tribute to Michael Jackson. Seriously. Top that Ochocinco and T.O.!

The league is looking into the matter for possible fines/suspensions.

A couple K bye's

If anybody was wondering if Michael Jackson was picked in my celebrity death pool...here's the update: I picked him in the 4th round. I'm like the Jack Z. of Death Drafts, I know where to find the best sleepers.

Related to that, here's a true story of an event that happened to me last night. No exaggeration. I'm pulling through the Taco Bell drive through after work when the following exchange happens between me and the girl working the window (not attractive by any reasonable measure):
Girl - "That'll be $7.45...HEY! Oh my God did you hear Michael Jackson died?
Me - "Oh yeah...he's out. It's all over the internet and radio."
Girl - "Wait...I heard it could only be a heart attack and he might be alive!"
Me - "He's gone. Deal with it."
Girl - "It's just crazy...you know?!"
Me - "You know what else is crazy? I picked him in the 4th round of my celebrity death pool. I get a point for that."
Girl - "Ummm...that's kind of weird."
Me - "You know what else is weird? Starting a conversation with a customer in the drive thru lane at Taco Bell about Michael Jackson's death."

And finally, on a Chuckie Hacks personal note...I'll basically be ending my run of posting here on the old site. Job promotion and studies for the CPA exam will do that to a blogger. It's been a good run and I can retire knowing I'm the 2nd best Brewer blogger in the business (nobody tops KLSnow...even I'll admit that). I'll still comment from time to time and maybe throw up a post if I get real worked up about something...but that's basically it. I hope if I left a lasting mark on anyone its that the word "billups" has made it's way into their everyday vocabulary.

Celebrity Death Update Bitches!

With the recent tragic ultimate K bye of football gunslinger Sammy Baugh, there has been a drastic turn of events in my CDL (Celebrity Death League). Baugh was the 7th round pick (43rd overall) by my buddy Rich. Quite the late-round pick if I do say so myself.

I thought I had this thing locked up...only had two more weeks to go and I would ship the first place prize. Now its looking like a tie will most likely happen to myself and Rich. Not sure what the tie-breaker will be...perhaps a 5 mile race (HA!).

With two weeks left...here are the standings:
Woz - 2 deaths (Charlton Heston & Sydney Pollack) - 2 points
Rich - 2 deaths (Albert Hoffman & Sammy Baugh) - 2 points
BK - 1 death (UGA VI the Georgia Bulldog) - 1/2 point.

Seriously Amy Winehouse...it's your time. Hook Woz up.

More valuable: Jack Z or Doug Melvin?

As I was just reading the paper over lunch an interesting idea/thought/possibility popped into my head that I thought might make a good discussion topic regarding both Doug M. and Jack Z.

Who is currently more valuable to the Milwaukee Brewers organization: Jack Z or Doug Melvin?

Both are highly valuable...no doubt. Both are legitimate general managers (Doug has proved that by experience...one would have to assume Jack Z would be no slouch in the role). The "more valuable" question popped into my brain when I read and realized that Doug Melvin is only signed through 2009. Theories trickled next: "Is this part of Mark. A's long-term plan? Is he hoping Jack Z doesn't bolt for some chump team in the next year so he can let Melvin go and hand the reins to Jack?"

Here are some other thoughts/comments to consider as we open this up to forum:

-If Jack Z bolts for Seattle or some other team, we not only lose him...but I would imagine we'll lose at least half his staff as well. Not good for the crew.
-Being a general manager is well...an exclusive club. There's only 32 of them. This is a highly speculative topic that is hard to quantify...but if Melvin goes, there goes his "connections" to with the other GM's. Don't forget...Doug's been the top man for like...13 years now (First with the Rangers). How much is politics a factor in this game?
-Both men are the same age (close enough). The chances of a heart attack are the same (relatively speaking). Let's put it this way. They would go 1 after each other if they were to be picked in my Celebrity Death League.
-The Brewers have finally come to grips with current baseball economics (them being a mid-market team) and realized that solid draft selection year by year is the way to maintain overall decency in the sport. That...along with occasional plug ins by veterans either by late-season acquisitions or free agent pickups is the key to long-term success. This type of style favors Jack Z.
-Doug Melvin is Canadian. I can't find anything to say he is...so I'm guessing Jack Z is not. It's always good to have a few Canadians around.

What do you guys think? No doubt both guys are valuable. But as I write this and think about it more and more...perhaps the question becomes: Who is more expendable? If that is the question...I would have to say that Doug Melvin is more expendable of the two.

No longer a sleeper pick

Wow...all I can say is this: If Tom Bosley isn't a first round pick in next year's Celebrity Death League...somebody in our league hasn't been doing their research. I mean...he's basically there already.

Prove us wrong Tom!

Celebrity Death & General Gambling update

Albert Hoffman...the inventor of LSD...tragically lost his life this past weekend.

Congrats to my buddy Dick (an infrequent Hacker) for selecting him in the 3rd round of my Celebrity Death Pool. Quite the pick.

That's the second death amongst celebrities picked for this pool (I had Charlton Heston...who was tragically lost a month or so ago). Here are the updated scores for your amusement.
Woziszeus - 1
Dick - 1
GreatOne - 0
Lofty - 0
DreamCrusher - 0
MK - 0
BK - 0

I actually lost an additional $10 because I had a side bet with Dick. We had a straight up $10 bet as to who would go first (this year only). I had John Goodman...and he had A. Hoffman. Congrats on the side win Dick.

In other side action gambling news, I sent out a general email to some buddies laying the over/under on Ryan Braun home runs in the month of May at 9.5. The Great One (who is the worst sports better on the planet and knows nothing about Baseball or the Brewers in general) immediately took the under and we agreed upon a $50 bet. My Jewish buddy has took out 2 already. Easy money baby!

K bye Charlton Heston

The world lost a great man this weekend.

Forget the political views. Focus on his film career. Dude was a part of some BADASS movies.

Planet of the goddamn apes. Tombstone. True Lies! Wayne's World 2. The list goes on and on.

In any event, the main point of the post is that I picked Mr. Heston in the 2nd round of my celebrity death pool this year. To date, he is the only celebrity that has kicked the bucket.

Ship me the 1 point. WozisZeus in the lead. Effing ship it.

"They tried to make me go to rehab...

...and I said no, no, no!"

From Bill Simmons' mailbag today:
Q: If you had the No. 1 pick in a death pool draft, would you go with Britney Spears or Amy Winehouse?

-- Mike P., Morristown, N.J.

SG: I'll do this in super-intense, face-turning-red, Todd McShay mode ...

"Mike, Amy Winehouse has to to be the No. 1 pick. This girl has every tool you'd want: She's addicted to drugs; she has no concern about her own safety; she hangs out with other people who do drugs; and the song 'Rehab' feels like a self-eulogy every time she sings it! I judge my No. 1 picks in a death pool by one thing: If CNN reports that he or she died, would I be remotely surprised? In the case of Amy Winehouse? NO! I would not be surprised! As for Britney, her stock has been falling with GMs across the league -- she's finally getting help, she's on bipolar meds and she jettisoned some of the negative influences in her life. We're starting to hear whispers that she might drop out of the top five. I've had GMs tell me that Mary Kate Olsen and Dennis Rodman have moved ahead of Britney on their boards ..."

This is why I would be just an amazing GM. I was able to grab Amy Winehouse in the 6th round of my Celebrity Death Pool. Just wanted to remind everyone...no big deal.

Fantasy Celebrity Death League

This year was the first year in which I started a celebrity death league. 7 players the first year. You might have heard of it, but basically its a fantasy league in which you pick celebrities that you think are going to die in the calendar year. I stumbled across a few websites that do such leagues, and was immediately intrigued. Here is the format of the league I started:

-There are 11 rounds in the draft
-Person chosen must be of agreed celebrity status by at least 2 others in the league
-You pick 9 celebrities over the age of 30, 1 under the age of 30 (jackpot pick), and 1 mascot/animal/person who is famous mainly because they played some sort of animal.
-Point system: 1 point for regular celebrity death, 2 points for jackpot death, 1/2 point for mascot death.
-The league is a keeper league, in which you get to keep 5 of your picks each year (if you choose).

Here is my team...without a doubt the greatest team ever picked:
-Billy Graham
-Charlton Heston
-Michael J Fox
-Dick Clark
-Sydney Pollack (he was on an episode of Entourage)
-John Goodman
-Katherine Helmond (Mona from "Who's the Boss")
-Rowdy Roddy Piper
-Amy Winehouse (Jackpot pick)
-Peter Mayhew...ie Chewbacca from "Star Wars" (Mascot)

No doubt the steal of the draft was getting Amy Winehouse in the 6th round. There is no way that crazy woman makes it through the year with her crack habit.

Other picks from the other guys that I thought were solid/humorous:
-Owen Wilson
-Mary Kate Olsen (slightly ironic that Heath Ledger recently died in her house)
-Jack Kevorkian
-Montecore (Siegfried's Tiger)
-Bevo the Texas Longhorn

Of all the recent celebrity death's...none were chosen for the league.

Any thoughts on my team?
