Unofficial Chuckie Hacks Poll - Halladay Edition

Roy Halladay is purportedly available in a trade. I heard on the radio that Jayson Stark hears that the Jays want "5 or 6 players, including your team's top 2 prospects" in order to get Halladay.

While that is ridiculous posturing on the part of the Blue Jays, if you ran the Brewers what would you trade for Roy Halladay? A package centered on Gamel or Escobar? Gamel and Escobar?

Personally, I'd give up Gamel or Escobar (not both), plus Parra (whose brain might work better in a country on the metric system) and I suppose another mid-tier prospect. I don't think the Brewers could do more than that, although Halladay is signed through 2010 at a relatively reasonable $15+ million next year. To be clear, I'm not saying the Blue Jays would take this package - it's just the most I'd give if I were Doug Melvin. Parra is a young left handed pitcher with physical upside, Escobar is the top SS prospect in the minors.

Halladay is a super pitcher who has done it for years in the tough AL East, and (captain obvious alert!!!) a rotation with Halladay and Gallardo at the top is much better than a rotation with Gallardo and ??? at the top. It might even make Ryan Braun happy.

How much would you give?

Braun: McClung and Burns Suck, Help Wanted

Ryan Braun, not pulling punches again.

Should the Brewers make a trade for a starting pitcher?

"I wish I got to make decisions like that," Braun said with a smile. "I wish I was in those conversations. I know he’s trying to make our ball club better. I know he recognizes the importance of making a move and making it soon.

"At the same, I think everybody has recognized there are a lot of teams still in the race. There are not too many teams willing to give guys up and if they are, the asking price is pretty high.

"That being said, it would be nice to make a move and it would be nice to do something to help us out for the time being. The sooner we do it, the better."

Why trade for a starter?

Braun said the Cubs' starting pitchers are "a lot better than ours."

"They threw the ball a lot better than our starters did," said Braun. "They certainly swung the bats better than we did as well. Clearly, they were the better team.

"It was nice to at least get one win but they clearly outplayed us and outperformed us during the series."

"Their starting pitching was clearly a lot better than ours in this series. All four guys we saw in this series are No. 1, worst-case, No. 2 type starters. They make big pitches in big situations. You’re not always going to get hits in those situations."

A decent point - when you're outplayed by the 4th place team in the division over the course of a 4-game series, you might want to consider some changes to shore up some weaknesses.

But Ryan, Dave Bush is hurt and Manny Parra's brain is broken!

"Regardless of the reasons, we’ve got to find a way to throw the ball a little bit better for us to have success. When you’re constantly behind in games, it’s not easy and not fun."

I sure hope Ryan hasn't hurt the feelings of Seth McClung or Mike Burns. That would be a shame.

Poor Question

Anybody catch the in-game text question on Friday? It was "Who is your favorite Brewers Personality" with the choices of: Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, Ken Macha, or Mike Cameron. Really? Those are the choices? Let's break it down:

Ryan Braun: His personality is that of an arrogant asshole. That's fine as long as he keeps hitting bombs and annoying Tony LaVodka.

Ken Macha: Seems like a good guy. Throws in a few zingers, and gives a good interview. Compared to Ned Yost, Macha is Chris Farley. I guess this is a legitimate choice, but picking your 59 year-old manager as your "favorite personality" doesn't seem right. Unless it's Mike Ditka.

Prince Fielder: Does he even have a personality? I guess he likes to fight Manny Parra. SIDE NOTE: I saw Manny's numbers pre, and post-Prince scuffle in the dugout...it's not good. I'll try to find them again. END OF SIDE NOTE. Prince's interviews are dry toast and he mixes in the occasional giggle between numerous nervous coughs. How is Prince an option for this question?

Mike Cameron: Again, nothing much going on here. By all accounts, he's a good guy and a true professional, rather than a big time "personality."

All-in-all a silly question with terrible choices.

In other news, the starting pitching is, in the words of Joe Namath, strugggellingg. It's Yo and hold your breath until Yo pitches again.

The Current "Feel" of the 2009 Milwaukee Brewers

Ok, does Brad Nelson not remind you guys of Bob Hamelin? Seriously, it just hit me. I just saw his RBI single in the 8th and his swing looks JUST like The Hammers'.

Ok, me somehow thinking last week that Trot Nixon might have a chance to break camp on the team was probably the dumbest thing I've ever written. I'll admit that. But I was pretty sure of myself that Mike Lamb would make it. I was a little surprised he was basically cut today, considering he was playing a little better as of late. I'm all for riding the hot hand in the form of Casey McGehee (Side Note: the pronunciation of his last time is stupid), but does one hot spring earn you a spot? Hey I guess it did. Welcome to the show Casey. He's got the look of a Brewer that's for sure with that little flavor saver on his chin. A little advice for the guy...try to take a walk every now and again. But as always with the new young guys, I'm in his corner until he does/says something asinine.

Anybody paying attention to JJ Hardy's offensive stats this spring? Good Lord. He officially gets the Spring Training Soul Owner label (OPS of 1.36!!!). I'm thinking big things from JJ this year. He's giving off the feeling that he's playing with a little chip on his shoulder due to Escobar nipping at his ankles. The whole Hardy/Escobar topic is going to be a great topic of debate for the next year or two. Just so many ways it could play out.

Bill Hall. 11 strikeouts v 1 walk this spring. Nice Job Lasik.

Ummm...really...Yovanni Gallardo as the NL Cy Young? I drink the home town kool aid as much as any Brewer Blogger, but it seems like too much of a stretch. Get it done Yo.

How is everybody out there "feeling" about this team? I kind of like the stigma surrounding the team this year. Read any one of the Brewer Previews that are all over the web: Pitching is too thin. They won't be able to contend. They'll take a step or two back after last year's postseason run...blah blah etc.

I think it's a good thing. It's almost like we're the underdogs again. Assuming Braun didn't break his thumb tonight, you've got to like this team's chances to reach the upper 80's in wins.

I'm excited for the team. I'm excited for the offense. I'm excited that management has brought in experienced no-nonsense type of coaches. We've got 6 of the 8 position spots filled by young homegrown guys who are (Bill Hall excluded) still developing. Even Dick Weeks looks like he's figured a few things out.

I'm on board with this team. Just get rid of Gwynn.

Pirates Fever, Catch it

High comedy on MLB Network's "30 Clubs in 30 Days" about the Pirates. They used the phrases "scrappy," and "young guys taking the next step" for about 20 minutes before I had to turn it off. You know it's bad when Dan Pleasac says "There are bright spots with Paul Maholm..." and then trails off mentioning no more bright spots. The lineup looks pretty sweet with catcher Ryan Doumit and his 69 RBI batting cleanup, some guy named Nyjer batting leadoff, with the brothers LaRoche mixed in for fun. I guess their closer and setup guy are good. It was a 1 hour program and I said to myself "what on earth could they possibly talk about for another 40 minutes?" Click.

Too bad because Pittsburgh is a pretty sweet city and PNC Park is phenomenal. I've been to about a dozen MLB ballparks and PNC is easily my favorite. And Pittsburgh is really nice too. You think Pittsburgh, and dirty steel mills come to mind. Not at all. It's really clean and modern.

Pirates fever...CATCH IT!

Brewers Add a Starter! Brewers Add a Starter!

Ben Sheets? Bah!

Braden Looper? Bah!

Randy Wolf? Bah! Bah!

The Milwaukee Brewers traded for a 6th starter today, getting Chase Wright from the Yankees in exchange for a catcher/outfielder who raked at Class A West Virginia last year at age 23.

Wright was 10-3 with a 2.72 ERA at 3 levels of New York's minor league system in 2008, one year after being rushed to the big leagues from AA for a couple of appearances with the Yankees. He gave up 4 straight home runs in Fenway Park in one appearance that year, so he's probably happy to get out of the AL East.

Seriously, it would appear that this guy is now the next in line if a starter falters or gets hurt, at least on paper. I'm in favor of this move. No word on whether the Yankees asked Milwaukee to throw some money into this deal, like $50,000 or something.
