The First of Many...

This surly won't be the last of my baseball comments to be WRONG. From my NL Central predictions:
"I’m betting on bounce back years from Brad Lidge..."
Lidge was just relieved of his closer duties after imitating the Hindenburg in each of his 2 outings thus far.

Bradley Lidge was here.

Milwaukee Welcomes the Indians Again

The Indians and Angels are playing a series at Miller Park this week. Just like in Major League. Odd, I know.

And no jokes that "there's finally a major league baseball team calling Miller Park home" - that's not funny.

Tragedy Averted

Thanks to some hot hitting by Jenks and Counsell and a decent performance from Cubs killer Chris Capuano, the Crew managed to salvage game three of the series today. Thank goodness for Wade Miller.

Despite the fact that the Jenkins Jungle has been relocated to left field, Jenks continues to pepper the right field bleachers...how 'bout showing the Jungle a little love, Geoff? Go the other way!

Jenks, feed the Jungle!

Can somebody please tell me what the Brewers' record is in those retro unis over the past 2 years? I bet they're playing about .200 ball in those things.

Jay Buhner, Reuniting With Friends

Former Mariner free-swinger Jay Buhner (ass) clowning around with old friends. Remind me never to shake this guys hand...

Masters Update

We're on for a classic Masters weekend starting Saturday. The course is playing tough, with cold weather, high winds, and fast conditions. The leaders going into the weekend are Brett Wetterich and South African Tim Clark....

Justin Rose, and his gay jeans/slacks with belt buckle are just two shots back...

The asian cowboy, Shingo Katayama, is lurking...

As is Phil.

While Sergio's Florida Gators gear, with its championship pedigree, couldn't save him from missing the cut.

But the biggest mover of Friday was our hometown guy, Jerry Kelly, who enters the weekend 2 shots back at even par. Look for Jerry to stay hot and win the Masters this weekend.

Murder Was the Case

Sad to report yet another murder of a miniature horse. Naturally, Willis is displeased.

Around The Horn

With no Brewer game to watch, here's a few random observations around the diamonds.

  • First a trivia question. I'll give you 63 guesses who recorded the win and the save for Cincinnati on Thursday? Answer below.
  • The Brewers opening series was a success. They pitched well (sans Aquino), didn't commit an error, worked the count, hit balls the other way, Wise didn't start Miller Park on fire, and Turnbow found the strike zone. A 2-1 series victory over the Dodgers is a success...LA will win plenty this year.
  • Question from Popp: "Do you know what color snow is? Do you know what color a baseball is?" Well...it was snowing at Yankee stadium in the bottom of the 8th, yet the game continued.
  • The White Sox are in trouble. Remember when they had a seemingly endless supply of starting pitching? They traded Freddie Garcia, traded Brandon McCarthey (for no reason), Contreras followed up his rough second half of 06 by getting shelled, Garland's platoon also took on plenty of mortar, and Buehrle left today's game after getting drilled by a comebacker.
  • Boston's import Datsun Mitsubishi is the real deal. I picked him as my AL Cy Young, which means he'll start getting bombed soon.
  • If Cleveland had another decent SP and reliever, they would be scary-good.
  • If you didn't see the Cincinnati mayor throw out the first pitch on opening day, it's a must see. Check out Eric Davis' "WTF!!!!" reaction! The damn thing almost went into the dugout!
  • Two story lines I'll be watching this year: Sammy Sosa is back. This guys is straight junk. And he's batting 5th!! Well, for 2 games at least. I smell a .232 season coming his way. Also, the Nats are brutal. Quick, name 3 guys on their squad? Can't do it. Ray Ray King and his boiler is one.
  • The Pirates are 3-0 and the Cards are 0-3. Who knew? You think Tony LaVodka expected to get outscored by the Mets 20-2?
  • Baseball Tonight (the only good show left on ESPN) is back. The rundown: Tino Martinez is OUT (thank the lord), Orel Hershiser is still IN (help me here lord), Dusty Baker is IN (terrible), no sign of Jeff Brantley (the guy who looks like the talking Trash Heap on Fraggle Rock), Karl Ravich still has a toupe, and 'Nando Vina joined the party. He's actually not too bad....but I keep waiting for Joey Belle to run across the set and forearm shivver him to the ground.
  • I predicted Brad Lidge to have a bounce back year...I was wrong. He's done. D-U-N, dun.
  • Goldy, you picked a bad time to leave KC. They actually have some good, young talent. Alex Gordan is a STUD, Greinke is back, Tehan is pretty good, and Pena Jr can pick it at SS.
  • Trivia answer: Victor Santos got the win, Stormy Weathers picked up the save. They might as well pick up Mike Buddie and Valerio De Los Santos in Cinci.

Dance your cares away,

Worry's for another day.

Let the music play,

Down at Fraggle Rock. (clap, clap)

Down at Fraggle Rock. (clap, clap)

Down at Fraggle Rock!

Quick Hitters on Tonight's Game

Quick thoughts on tonight's 5-4 loss:
  • My first Ned Yost second-guessing of the year: Don't think that Carlos V was the right guy to bring in when losing 2-1 late in the game. Then, when Carlos walked the bases loaded with nobody out, he brings in Dessens? Huh? Not exactly the spot to use our long relief guys, in my opinion. Turnbow was obviously in the plans tonight - he pitched the next inning. Why not use him there? Still afraid of his damaged psyche?

  • Early returns on Johnny Estrada are very positive. Damian Miller won't see many at-bats this year.

  • Boy, does LA have some bullpen arms that make people look silly. The announcers said that Jonathan Broxton is 290! He carries it much better than Bartolo Colon does.

Bart, retaining water

Tanking for Durant

The Bucks and Celtics did their best to lose tonight, but the Bucks sucked less, winning 98-89. Their tactic of sitting Mike Redd, Mo Williams and Brian Skinner was matched by Boston, who went without Paul Pierce and Al Jefferson.

Way to not be obvious, guys.

It's all about the ping pong balls

Doug Davis on the Bump

Who can forget this classic Chuckie Hacks story about Doug Davis? Let's see how good his arm looks tonight in his first start of the year....which is in Coors Field, no less. Yes, my kids college tuition will be riding on the Rockies...

2-0

"I'm back biznitches..."

Thanks in large part to a Kevin "Pissant" Mench 2-run bomb and a yeoman's effort by the bully, your Milwaukee Brewers are 2-0! Come on, admit it...who else was soiling their pants when D-Bow's first pitch almost left the yard? He settled down and pitched a 1,2,3 8th. Matty Wise also pitched well.

In other NL Central news, Chris Carpenter has elbow soreness leaving Tony LaVodka and the Redbirds with a rotation of: Kip Wells, Adam Wainright, John Tudor, Bob Tewksbury, and the corps of Darryl Kile.

Instead of putting out the fires, the Astronauts bully continue to flick lit matches onto these situations. Daniel Wheeler served up a Xavier Nady bomb to put the Astros at 0-2 for the season.

Opening Day Diary

Just watched CoCo mow down the Dodgers in the 9th for his first save of the year, with Kevin Bench acting as the hero with a 2-run bomb to give the Crew the lead for good. Wow, watching Brewers Live after the game - this lady is a train wreck sitting next to Davey Nelson. She's like the "Boom goes the dynamite" guy...only presumably gets paid for this gig.

"And he passes it to the man...and boom goes the dynamite"

[Awkward transition to Opening Day diary]

Now that I've had a day to reflect on the glory that was Opening Day, here's a little blow-by-blow of the day:

8:55 a.m. Pulling into the Blue Mound parking lot, we've been told by a Brewers insider that they'll start letting cars into the lot at 9 a.m. rather than 10 a.m., which had been publicized. The source was right (they actually were letting people in before 9), and we're "on deck" to get into the lot. Then the parking lot attendant decides to yap with the guy in the car ahead of us about God knows what.

9:01 a.m. Finally get up to the lot attendant, and we don't say a word. You're not sucking us in with some stupid story old man. We pretend to not speak English, pay our $8, and are on our way in 15 seconds. That's how you do it.

9:03 a.m. First of many mistakes of the day - poor communication by the Straub and Goldsworthy vehicles leave us not parking side to side, thereby cutting our tailgating area in half. Not a good start. Next year, we're have a planning meeting for this thing.

9:10 a.m. We've shaken off this early mistake, unpacked the Tahoe and heard "Brewers, Brewers, Turning up the Heat" for the first of about 96 times. We staked out a spot for the washers game adjacent to I-94. Bloody Marys and Miller Lites are served. Goldy reports that the port-o-lets still smell like Wrigley spearmint gum. Fearless prediction: this will not last.

10:15 a.m. The Didier short bus pulls into the lot. We're told that the last row of seats has been modified and turned into a toilet. I'm having a hard time picturing this from Matera's description, but given the lines already forming at the port-o-lets, I'll find out first hand before long. I count 6 port-o-lets for the entire Bluemound parking lot - comment from a random in line: "they spend $60 million on payroll and $60 on port-o-lets." Men are already climbing a hill on the north end of the lot to use the woods as a toilet.

10:50 a.m. Just took 3 games in a row from Straub in the washers game, including a series-changing automatic win with a washer perched on the frame of the box. $4 richer, I retreat to grill a burger.

11:30 a.m. Random guy wearing the Masters green jacket with the megaphone is yelling at people peeing on the hill. Life is just a little bit more fun when a megaphone is involved.

11:50 a.m. Waiting in line for the bathroom (you may notice a theme here) Goldy hears the early line of the day. Random guy talking to somebody on his cell phone: "don't call me late tonight. I plan to be dead by 8 o'clock." We haven't hit noon yet.

12:25 p.m. Beers, washers. Repeat.

12:45 p.m. With everyone heading to the game (1:05 start), the bathroom lines are ridiculous. I'm hitting the bus to see what this rigged up toilet is all about. Basically, they took out the cushion and placed a wood plank in its place, cut a hole in the wood, put a metal funnel in the hole, which funnels into a receptacle below the bus. Then hung a curtain rod around the "toilet" and put newspaper on the windows so there's no peep show. Fairly ingenious. I also witnessed the emptying of the receptacle. Gross.

1:10 p.m. Time to head over to the game. I haven't seen the national anthem at a Brewers game since 1988.

1:25 p.m. Safely in our seat, the score is 1-1 after Kent goes yard off Sheets. I still don't know how the Brewers scored their first run.

3rd inning (lost track of time during the game, so we'll measure the passage of time in innings now) Some lady (using that term loosely) is being helped up the aisle, with a large amount of vomit all over the front of her shirt. This lady must be 50. All class. Then some guy walks up behind her, with puke all over his shoulder. Then we see a guy taking off his replica Turnbow jersey because the back is full of vomit. It's like nuclear fallout down in section 420. Nobody sits within 6 seats of ground zero for the rest of the game.

4th inning Some fat guy 2 sections over is wearing a kilt, with his shirt off, spinning it around his head like a helicopter, trying to rev up the fans. This guy looks like a white version of the fat guy from Old School. I mean, rolls after rolls. Again, gross.

6th inning Goldy notices a guy wearing legit Zubaz. Goldy has an eye for these types of things.

8th inning Holy crap, it's the 8th already? Sheets is absolutely mowing them down. He gets a standing O walking up to take his at-bat in the bottom of the 8th. He strikes out for the third time. We don't care.

9th inning Brady Clark (who snuck into the game when I wasn't paying attention in a double switch in the 5th) gets up and promptly doubles for the second hit off of Sheets. The crowd boos Brady mercilessly like he's Gary Sheffield or something. I love it.

9th inning Ballgame. 7-1 Crew. Awesome.

2:50 p.m. That was the fastest game in the history of the world. At least it seemed like it. We're already on our way out of Miller Park and it isn't 3 p.m. yet. Thanks Ben.

3-4 p.m. More washers and beers. A Mike Kelley sighting. Mikey Morgan runs up behind Matera, puts the crook in his arm up to his crotch and grabs his gut, yelling "that's the cobra, motherf#!@!" Haven't seen that move before. Nicely done.

Aftermath That's pretty much it, we all go our separate ways, another successful Opening Day in the books. Good times.

"Miller Park. Drink, it, in..."

I'm guessing that's not root beer coming out of that 12 person beer bong...

Wambold? and Other Thoughts

What does Paul Wambold do with his free time in Minneapolis? Well, he is apparently watching more sports and well on his way to becoming a Fantasy/Bracket picking expert. Fresh off his stunning second place finish in the Camp Randall Fantasy Football League, Wambold has stunned the Chucike Hacks world to take home the championship in the inaugural Greater Chuckie Hacks Open NCAA pool. For the victory, Wambold receives nothing, other than being able to rub this in for the next year. Congrats Paul. The top 5 looked like this:
1. Paul Wambold 180 points
2. Tony Kern 176
3. Tony Matera 174
4. Tim Burg 172
5. (tie) Kyle Kroner, Mark Pierson 168
Also a special shout out to Chopp who finished in last.

Several other thoughts:
- Good time at Opening Day yesterday. McManus is in the process of putting together a list of some of the great non-baseball moments of the day. We are all looking forward to that one. Especially the Cobra mention.
- The Mavs signed Kevin Willis to a 10-day contract. I could not believe this when I it scrolled across the screen last night. Was Mark Eaton busy? Willis was old when he played with Dominique.
- They replayed the Brewers game on FSN Wisconsin last night. I flipped between that and the basketball. Thought that Brian Anderson did an excellent job in his first game as the play-by-play guy. Doesn't get too high or low and doesn't get wood over routine plays or at-bats like Darren the dork did. Another plus was that when Sheets got two strikes on the last batter, the booth stayed silent until Hart caught the last out. I liked that. Good opening effort by Brian. Lets just hope he doesn't get dragged down to Bill's level.
- In the 2nd inning, Hardy hit a little blooper into center. Weeks was on first and went to third on the play. The amazing part of this was Rickie was only about two steps past second when Juan Pierre picked up the ball in very shallow center field. The play was not even very close at third. I am convinced that if I was given a week, right now, to get my arm back into playing condition, I would have a better arm than Juan Pierre.
- The L.A. Times played up the sun/glass panel issues in regards to Jenkins double. Jeff Kent's response was: "This is a bad investment of a ballpark." Thanks for your input, Jeff. Now go wash a truck, dick.
-Unfortunately no Miniature Horses were spotted during any Opening Day festivities. However, there were reports of a 12-person beer bong.
-Next time you watch Baseball Tonight, check out John Kruk's new look. I think he may be headed towards the world of porn.
- Excellent NL Central previews by McManus and Chopp last week.

Crappy Opening Day Starters

I always like to peruse the opening day pitching matchups...it's a good barometer of your starting staff. Here are some gems that will be taking the bump tomorrow:

Jeff Cook, COL: 9-15 last year. Looks like another solid rotation for the Rocks this year.

Carl Pavano, NYY: 2006, zero pitches thrown. $200 million payroll and this guy is their opening day starter??

John Patterson, WASH: He's not terrible, but Patterson better win every start this year...the rest of the staff might win about 20 games combined.

And last but not least...Gil Meche, KC. Yes, it's your favorite $11 million per year pitcher. Think about it. $55 million for a guy who would be the Brewers #5 starter. Good job Gil!

Interesting 1982 Article

Nice 1982 spring training retrospective by the Wisconsin State Journal's Vic Feuerherd...he covered the 82 Brewers for the Milwaukee Sentinel. Charlie Moore and Ned Yost wanted to be traded...yes, that Ned Yost.

Story

Gwynn, Aquino Head to Milwaukee

Tony Gwynn Jr. and Greg Aquino made the cut as the last men on the 25 man roster - sending Vinny Rottino and Jose Capellan to Nashville. Amazing to see Capellan go from bullpen workhorse last year to minor leaguer this year...
