Anyone but LaPorta or Gamel. But I think with teams like the Cubs also interested, it would take one of them to get the deal done. So don't make the move, Doug!
i believe each and every one of the 30 teams has enough in their minor league system to trade for any one player in baseball who is made available. willingness to do so, of course, is another question.
for example, the same things were being said a year ago about the cubs system (which consistently ranks in the upper half of the middle of the pack). but a package involving marmol, soto and whatever else certainly could have gotten a deal done for any number of players. but the cubs wouldn't do that because they had the PCL MVP and a shutdown closer in the making.
now, the cubs could offer eric patterson (who the cubs very much like), vitters, ceda, veal, marshall, gallagher for CC. marmol could even be involved. but they apparently aren't going to do that, because that would be giving up too much when they could instead get wolf, burnett or even harden for less - hopefully with similar results.
I want to go into the HOF has a Milwaukee Brewer. Plus chicks dig the long ball, and all you would have to give up is TG Jr, who isn't going to make it into the Brewers OF anytime soon.
that said, i'm not sure it will take "several top prospects" to get it done. look what the mets had to give up to get johan. i'm not sure why anybody would pay more than that for 2-plus months of CC.
i see where buster olney is floating the prince for CC idea again, by the way.
I think a better solution is Derek Lowe. The Dodgers struggle and are not going anywhere, they would love to move him, the guy is a winner and despite not living up to his contract at times, his contract now is manageable in this ridiculously inflated market place. Plus could you imagine Prince and Sabbathia at the buffet table before the game???

JJ Hardy, 100 gallons of stadium sauce and the chorizo.
In the minor league system, I'd say anybody but Matt LaPorta should be available.
Remember that CC is not just a rental - the Brewers would get 2 compensatory draft picks for him after he bolts in free agency.

i'd give them zero, let the cubs pay too high for him...
then we can move on to san diego and get greg maddux, adding a solid playoff ready vet to the staff.
Somehow, I don't think the Cubs have the horses in their minor league system to get it done for Sabathia.
They'll end up with somebody like Burnett or Wolf.
They can have a package of Bill Hall, Gagne, and Irabarren (?).

i think.

That's my point - they don't have the depth in the system to believe that they can give up that much for Sabathia.
Deeper farm systems might be able to better absorb the loss of several top prospects.

The way I see it, if Cleveland doesn't get a couple of top prospects, they'll just hold on to Chocolate Cake and get the draft choices.
