Tofu Prince?

Well, I'm not sure I like this.

The Journal Sentinel is reporting that Prince Fielder is now a vegetarian.

As of February 3.

Why? Is it a diet?

No. His wife gave him a book that talked about how animals are treated and slaughtered for food, which "grossed him out." (Side note: Perhaps this will make Wrigleyville's nickname for Prince obsolete.)

As long as Prince can still mash 50 bombs on tofu burgers, I guess I'm OK with this, but put me down as skeptical at this point. Thankfully, Prince's wife is on the same page with me:

"My wife said that if I lose some power, she's cooking me a big steak."

Thank you, Mrs. Fielder.

does this change his tobacco habits? i suppose coming from a plant it would only mean more chew wads. maybe instead of the tobacco, prince can chew on a wad of overcooked steak like the mrs. was implying...

His street cred has to take a hit.

it shoes he is a wonderful and compassionate human being to consider the horrible inhumane torture and endless suffering the animals go thru to end up on your dinner plate. i am proud of him and he will set a great example!!

Yo, I too left the meats alone after seeing a video called the rave diet and Im assuming it was the same information that I saw that you read. Be very careful because I now subsituted the meat for starches. I was weighing 175lbs a year and half ago and now I weigh a whopping 215. the doctor told me that protein is very essential to the body and Im not getting enough with my current diet

hitting a few home runs is way more important than not torturing and murdering animals.

To Kill an Animal for eating is similar as To kill a man for his or her benefit. Thanks to Prince's wife for his new life style

There are vegetarian bodybuilders, so i doubt that a vegetarian baseball player is that "out there."
Soy stacks up pretty evenly on the protein scale with meat, while keeping the bad stuff out of your diet.

I'd say good for him for doing what he thinks is right, his decision doesn't affect any of you personally does it? =p

Well done! I wish more people would be so reasonable. :)

I wonder if he's gonna use a plastic baseball glove too...you know, the rawhide one came from an animal.

Many Doctors agree , eating meat, even fish, is NOT necessary for humans.
See: http://www.pcrm.org/
The people who want you to believe you need animal protein are mainly people who work in the meat industry-they have something to lose if people stop buying their products!

And to all the morons who keep saying he will be "weak" or unhealthy somehow:
ANY type of diet, if unbalanced, can leave a person weak or unhealthy, no matter if you eat meat or not,-
One must eat all the nutrients & protein you need, and replace the meat protein (which is harder for the body to process), not to just cut out meat and eat french fries and bread instead.

"Anonymous said"--8 times in less than an hour--without a reply; that's a bit scary. That tofu has got your brain! I'll put my 56-year-old meatAND vegetable-eating vital signs up against yours any day. You were right on ONE point--balance and moderation are the keys. Oh, and by the way, my total cholesterol? It's 134

"street cred has to take a hit"? Seriously? Just how stupid ARE people in "the street"?

Omni - maybe a little tofu would benefit YOUR brain. *Anyone* without a specific identity will automatically be credited as "anonymous."

Princey can consume meatless protein from plenty of sources and avoid all that fat (lentils, to cite one example, are loaded with protein).

I think someone needs to do a spoof on the "Happy cows come from California" commercial and then show the video of the cow torture that went on out there that was on the nightly news a while back. not to mention the huge recall on the beef...how many tons was it? Happy cows live in wisconsin bitches, california is like the insane asylum for cow life. How many "mad cows" come from wisconsin? none! We know how to raise our cattle here!

Everyone,
I am so sick and tired of hearing all of you talk about how inhuman animals are treated. Although some things could change in the food processing industry there is an Food chain. Humans eat animals. period. Get over it. Read the bible..

I gurantee this is more a publicity stunt than anything. Tofu burgers drenched in ketchup, sunflower seeds, come on guys.. prince will be eating meat 20 games into the season

Oh and for the person that thinks soy matches up pretty well in the protein department please redo your research to longterm.

And the most idiotic comment comes from the person thats quoted "to kill a an animal for eating is similiar as to kill a man for his or her benefit"

WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM AND PLEASE GO BACK

This is inspiring! Thank God for ethical eaters!

Well, I've read all of your pro and anti vege opinions. here is what I'd like you (espacially antiveges to think) about:

How would you rate cows, goats, sheep and horses in terms of strength?

I know since goats and sheep are small in size you can't measure their strengh.

But how about cows? Can a base ball player combat with a healthy cow?

And how about horses? They can give you rides of kilometeres...for hours without being tired

And above all, you know what? All these animals I mentioned are vegetarian, where do they get the protein to stay healthy and strong?

Having said that, why not take the lesson from the animals you are eating ...

Anonymous said...

Wow!! I've never thought about that! That's a very good point, Anonymous ....Thank you

Anonymous brings up some good points but you can't always just make those assumptions. Animals eat plants, which get all their energy from the sun, so lets skip a step and just sun bathe and grow strong? We cannot synthesize protein from grasses like horses and cows are able to. I am however a vegan, and i know you can get everything from plants that you need, it can be a big pain and hassle though, but i kind of like that, gets me out of having to eat with people i don't like. Also Carl Lewis became vegan in 1990, and he was obviously a great athelete and needed all his nutrients and whatnot.

Health, folks has a lot to do with, 1) what we eat, 2) the level of activity in our lifestyles, and 3) our genetics. Livestock do not synthesize protein from the grains, hay and silage they eat (sorry, Louie), the protein is in there. However, they do have well adapted, specialized digestive systems that allow better extraction and utilization of the nutrition in their diets. Humans do not have a rumen. That organ is very useful for cattle in digesting large volumes of fiber-based foodstuffs. Humans are omnivores. We are designed to eat a varied diet based on what is available (an evolutionary advantage), yet we are no longer hunter-gatherers. In our society we can eat what we choose. In Michael Pollan's book 'The Omnivore's Dilemma’, he writes (paraphrased), "eat what you need, mostly plants." Eating meat is a part of who mankind is, but the average person only needs about 4 oz of animal-based protein a day to meet their physiological needs, when paired with a healthy and balanced diet. Prince Field can get by just fine as a vegetarian as long as he gets the calories he needs in a high energy profession that is and the protein he needs to maintain his muscle mass to remain competitive as an athlete. I say, go for it Prince, but be sure to be smart about your diet and take care of yourself.

I have just been through some of the comments and it really looks some people out there still live in the middle ages...

Not being able to acknowledge in 2008 that non human animals go through a "life" of extrem misery and suffering just for the pleasure of your selfish palate is to live in complete denial.

And as for one of the best posts (" Humans eat animals. period. Get over it. Read the bible.."), let me ask you something: why don't you eat your bible ?

Anonymous said...

Oh, yeah, guess what? veggie vs meat = healthy vs diseased of all kinds ... hahahaahaha

Anonymous said...

ok, let's say there is no more animal left on the earth for meatlovers ... where will you get your animal protein? ... you will definitely eat your family members...obviously!!!

Hey, someone should tell him about
VeggieBrothers.com
www.veggiebrothers.com

It would make his life easier - lots of meat alternative options with heavy protein, great for athletes, like myself.

so if I were to kill a cow with my fierce bite and eat it would that be inhumane?
