Don't Piss Prince Off

Pirates reliever Matt Capps had a bad day yesterday. He gave up 2 earned without recording an out by giving up a 2-run shot by JJ Hardy in the Pirates' 6-3 loss.

Then, he made things worse.

Deciding that the best thing to do with the game slipping away for the Pirates was to bean the next batter, Capps unwittingly sealed the fate of his team for Sunday as well. He hit Prince Fielder in the upper shoulder (it would have hit him in the head if Prince didn't throw his shoulder up and deflect the ball), got himself ejected, and pissed off the best hitter on the Brewers in the process.

Rather than charge the mound last night, Prince took out his emotions on the Pirates today, hitting two bombs and scoring the winning run on a nifty slide around Ryan Doumit. The poor mope on the mound for this game-winning hit? You guessed it, Matt Capps. And Prince made sure Capps knew he was there, jumping up and down and clearly screaming "Yeah Mother!##@@" at Capps after scoring the winning run. He also stared Capps down as he entered the game from the bullpen while Prince was standing on second base.

Doumit wasn't impressed.

"It was a nice slide," he said. "My hat is off to him, but I think that's pretty bush league what he did afterwards."

Oh. Thanks for clearing that up Ryan. See, I thought it was bush league to throw at a guy's head, but what do I know? I'm not a part-time catcher on a 13-17 team.
.
Suck it Capps

The next series vs Pitt should be interesting...especially during Prince's first AB.

Great post Matt.

Doumitt is a Douchebag.

How about Capps' weekend? That guy's pretty good. Blow the game on Saturday, throw a bean ball and piss a guy off, and then blow a game less than 24 hours later. What was Tracy doing putting him in that spot on Sunday? Like the hottest team in baseball needs any additional motivation to win a game. How does Kruk's statement of the Pirates being in 1st place by the end of May look now?

I actually have a post about that coming up...there is a story behind that...

Brad, I can't wait. I mean it, I am very much looking forward to looking at that.

Seriously, the Pirates are miffed about Prince's actions. Do they not recall that Capps threw at Prince's head the night before. They should be thankful that Capps didn't get a limb torn off by Prince on Saturday night. By the way, I thought Prince said, "That's right MF'er" but I could be wrong. Fun game to be at yesterday, but I don't think a lot of the people understood the importance of Prince's big day.

I was at the game both Sat & Sun, and i was wearing my Fielder jersey to both games. I absolutely know exactly how important Fielder's actions were on Sunday. I expected some brewer pitcher to retaliate, but what Prince did sent a way tougher message than any bean ball could've. Not only 2 HR's (..and off the bat I thought he hit a 3rd.) but the emotion after the Willie Mays Hayes slide into home said, "The brewers have an identity; we're for real. Also, Matt Capps is an asshole." This young team grew up a little on Sunday. A young club with no post season chances goes out there and mixes it up on Sunday, this team just played out of their skulls with a total team effort and embarrassed the Pirates in a 4 game series. I'd much rather have that than a bench clearer.

AP- Good call on the Willie Mays Hays slide into the plate. Immediately after the play I told my wife that it looked like winning run from Major League. I don't think the umpire from yesterday was as animated as the movie ump however. Also, Jake Taylor did not go into the stands to make out with an olympic swimmer afterwards.

.....and Cordero was not able to walk a guy to get to the guy who was batting like .800 against him for the year for the save because he still has a 0.00 ERA. However, the Matt Capps head ball was not unlike Rick Vaughn's back ball after he gives up the grand slam so there were at least two similarities to Major League in this series. In the future if this ever come up again, I am going to refer to this four game streatch as the "Major League" series.

I don't think so (I wasn't, at least) - everyone just loves that old Chuck Carr quote.
