Have To

We get our blog license taken away if we don't mention Brett Favre.

So, it looks as if there's a solid chance #4 puts on the purple and yellow of the Minnesota Vikings. That would make it 3 different uniforms in 3 years. Ugh. That's like Derek Jeter putting on a Yankees, Fill in random team (Angels?), and a hated Red Sox jersey in three straight years at age 40. You'd rather not see it happen.

You mean, Favre's latest "retirement" might be one big lie? No way. I get so many predictions wrong on this site; I have to gloat when correct. Check out the Vikings blurb I did from the Brew Town Beat's mock draft done in January:

22 - Minnesota (CH)
Percy Harvin – WR – Florida

The Vikings top 3 needs are: Quarterback, quarterback, and quarterback. There's none to take at this point, unless they go with Nate Davis or some clown like that just to make Jason Whitlock happy. Besides, God#4 will be next year's Viking QB. Book it. In order to give Tavaris Brett Frerotte all the help they need, Minny goes with a TE or WR. I mean, Bobby Friggin Wade led them in receptions. The Vikes really wanted Pettigrew, only to be stung by the Todd/Philly connection. Harvin brings some explosiveness to the Vikes offense which will be enhanced by the Metrodome turf. Chilly can use Harvin in multiple ways (hand-offs, end-arounds, screens) that don't require their shitty QBs to throw the ball more than 5 yards downfield…which is exactly what they need. Secondary could also use an upgrade as its rumored our old friend Darren Sharper might play somewhere else in '09.

Maybe Favre to Minny isn't a lock. Matt offered up a good conspiracy theory: Brett's arm is cashed, he know he can't play. This is all a ploy. After meeting with Chilly, he can say "I just can't see myself playing for the Vikings," which would create more adulation from Packer fans (especially from the ones who are pissed) who would now think "see, he really is a true Packer." Could happen.

Last year, I would say the national feel was 50-50. Half wanted Favre back, half thought he was a douche. This year? It's like 80-20 (outside of Minnesota, where the fans would welcome 49 year old John Elway with open arms) he's a douche. I really haven't seen one article saying, "Yeah, Brett. You're still on top of your game, actually you should still be quarterbacking the Packers!" It's more like "Um, you sure you want to do this?"

Michael Lombardi calls him a liar, and Pete Prisco says he sucks and the Vikings would be fools to bring him in. Both are well respected writers, by the way.

Ah, who knows what will happen...but it just wouldn't be spring without a will-he, wont-he drama from the Ol' Gunslinger. You KNOW he loves the attention, right?

My guy Jagr (enormous Favre backer) emailed and said "If he goes to the Vikes, he's dead to me." Those are big words from Jagr.

Would you be pissed? Indifferent? Buying a purple #4 jersey? Who gives a crap, the Brewers are on? Brett Favre walks on water and will never do wrong? What's you're opinion?

I wouldn't care if the Pack won 2 games all year (guess which two), as long they get after that turd with vengeance. Multiple sacks and INTs. I would be happy if that's all the good the Pack had in them this upcoming season.

Just sent this to Brad but thought I'd chime in here.

There is also a school of thought that he may be doing this to get the Packers to offer him the $20 million dollar "PR Job" offer again.. who knows??? So if he comes back to Lambeau wearing Purple and attempts a Lambeau Leap do fans pour beer on him or hug him in admiration??

I know that I wouldn't pour beer on him, but only because I wouldn't waste good beer on that piece of trash!

Try explaining to a 9 year old how and why the Beloved Favre (who sits next to Lemieux, Gretzky, Yount and Jesus Christ in my house) may play for the HATED Vikings this year.. Not an easy task! I just told her, we are Packer fans before Favre fans. Once he puts on that jersey he becomes the enemy and in the words of Ivan Drago circa Rocky 4 "I must break you"!!!!

Actually, Favre still has his cheerleaders in the media who think he'd catapult the Vikings to the top of the NFC North.

John Clayton at ESPN thinks Brett gives the Vikings 2-3 extra wins.

And David Haugh at the Chicago Tribune believes the Bears (and presumably the Pakcers) should fear Favre as the Vikings qb.

I want him to suffer through mini camp, training camp and all the hard physical work and then suffer a career ending injury the week before they play GB. Make all the work and pain for nothing because we all know playing GB is the only reason he's doing this.

Regardless, I already bought my November 1st tickets last week because I knew he was coming back. Figured it was a smart move before they triple in price.

Honestly, I just don't give a rats right now. I think the Vikes would be a better team with Rosenfels at QB than Favre, so part of me does wish he would come back. Pterson would wear down halfway through the season because he would have to carry the ball 35 times a game and actually attempt to block a bit, which he sucks at.

I can't wait for football to be back so that they can pre-empt Brewers games with playoff implications for fucking pre-season shitty Packer games.

When he went to the Jets, I sincerely hoped that he played well. This is a different animal. He is allowing his stubborn redneck upbringing to take over his decision making. Coming back soley for revenge (presumably) is ridiculous.

Two years ago he would have been part of the answer had someone asked me "If you could have dinner with any four people, past or present, who would you choose." Now I hope to see him fail in the worst way.*

*If these rumors are true. If not, I'd still like to have dinner with him, but would probably replace him at the aforementioned table with John Lennon or Ben Franklin.

Until his jersey is retired, he's not a Packer anymore in my mind. He used to be awesome, I loved watching him play growing up, and he's a HOF'er and all of that, but he's just kind of a crappy QB now and he's damaging his image. Seriously, which QB's would you rather have right now, today on 5/6/09? I won't bore you with my list, but I count 13 other QB's in the league that I'd prefer, and that's leaving out guys like Flacco or Stafford who have all that cliched "upside".

I really do think that he feels like he needs to prove himself to Ted, which is actually kind of sad to me. Playing for random teams in desperate need of a QB doesn't prove Ted wrong. To prove Ted wrong he needs to go out there and be a better GB QB than Aaron Rodgers, and unless this is a Disney movie that's not going to happen. Like ever.

It is funny that the Vikings drafted Jackson high as a project, passed on a Cutler & Cassel deal in favor of Sage this summer, and now might be grasping at straws going after #4. Talk about a rudderless ship.

@Jagr: The $20 million promotional services contract with the Packers will happen, regardless of his status with the Vikings. The Packers need to have a deal with Favre in order to sell official merchandise with his name on it. The Packers have a similar deal with Bart Starr, for example. No matter what happens with the Vikings, the Packers will undoubtedly wish to continue making gobs of money by selling his official jersey and other items. The promotional services deal benefits both parties, so it will be done as soon as Favre actually retires from playing.

The Packers have no bargaining power to prevent him from playing for any team. Favre is perfectly free to turn himself into the NFL equivalent of a rodeo clown.

It just doesn't seem like summer's coming unless the words Favre and Cook show up in the same sentence of 15 stories a day.

This whole thing is making throw up in my mouth. Now I wonder what other childhood heroes of mine are d-bags. I'm half expecting Ryan Braun to be wearing a Cubs uniform soon trash talking about Doug Melvin. At least we are on the other end of a mess with Trevor Hoffman.

Favre's a true Packer. Take a look at his work with the Jest. Coach fired...check. Crushing late season defeats...check. Internal quibbling amongst players...check. Favre will bury the Viqueens in 09 when he plays there. In my mind he's doing us Packer fans a favor. A true Packer.

I am pretty sure the last time I checked they were the Green Bay Packers not the Green Bay Favres. I thought that the being a fan of the team transcended any single player. He only won one Super Bowl. F U Farve. Whats his record in Minnesota anyways? like 2-45 all time. I swear it took him his whole career to win up there. I don't remember him ever winning in Dallas (another dome). I know it is different when you are the home team but still.
