Chuck Gets Extended

Aaron Rodgers gets extended through 2014. This is a great move - He's one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL. I know what Packer/TT haters (Matt) are thinking: "Extend the guy after 7 games?" Well, he's not a rookie. They've seen what he's all about for the last 3 years. Hmmm, I guess cap flexibility isn't a bad thing. Especially with Jennings in line for some big time cash pretty soon.

Congrats, Chuck.

NUMBERS UPDATE:
Per ProFootballNews.com, the Rodgers contract is 6 years - $65 million with $20m guaranteed. By comparison, Tony Romo got 6 years, $67 mil with $30m guaranteed last year. Link.

It looks like Rodgers rolled his ankle a little bit in that photo.

Better get that looked at - could be a fracture.

How much was the extension for?

And the best part is the fact that we're so far under the cap means a lot of that $ that would normally hit us down the road will count this year.

Now just to the same with Jennings before the season is over and I'll be happy. They are doing a great job with the cap and not just signing new guys to use up the money, but instead using it to reduce future cap hits of these big contracts.

No numbers yet for the Rodgers contract. As for Jennings, he said he wants to wait until the off season. That could be a little ploy to get a little more cash right now.

The deadline for teams to get contracts done and still have them count against the 2008 salary cap is Wednesday. Essentially, the Pack is 20 million under the cap and they get a long term deal done and still have it count for this year's cap. That's pretty solid work. Wouldn't surprise me if they dropped some coin on Jennings soon as well. Either way, Jennings will get his at some point too.

Just remember this when people next year are screaming that Ted didn't spend any money on free agents or trade for Tony Gonzalez. The money is being spent on guys that are already here and that have performed above expectations. If that isn't the best motivation in the world I don't know what is.

How do you know it is a fantastic move if you don't even know what the numbers are?

You Ted lovers are great.

Hell and yes.
Now let's go earn some of that money on Sunday.

Because it will be in line with contract that other good, young QBs have gotten recently. In the David Garrard-Tony Romo range.

What, do you think they gave him a Peyton Manning-like $100 million deal?

While signing Rodgers long term is awesome, I think we're all forgetting that we're a 4-3 team with absolutely no running game and a line that hasn't been too good either. Outside of Jennings, has TT really done anything that a monkey couldn't do?

Um, Rodgers is playing like a pro bowler

I have to agree with Anonymous....what has TT done?
Signing Aaron long term is great! But, I think that was a no brainer. They have to lock him up, he is one of the future stars in the NFL.

Yeah, you're right. Rodgers, Woodson, Collins, Jennings, Pickett, Hawk, Crosby, and Bigbie all suck.

Based on the JS story today, it says Jennings doesn't want to negotiate until after the season for an extension.

Anyone could've drafted Rodgers, Hawk, and Crosby. Signing Woodson wasn't a risk either. Any GM in football could've done that. Collins and Bigby are on a couple week hot streak that really only proves how inconsistent those two are. That leaves us with Jennings again, who has been the only real praise worthy move Thompson has made.

Also, Rodgers is now amongst the top 5 paid players in the NFL. I'm happy as hell that we re-signed him, but how does a guy with 7 games under his belt get that kind of leverage? Combine that with Grant's $30 million deal when he literally had no leverage and one has to wonder if Thompson even knows how to use leverage or how to negotiate. He'll probably end up making Jennings the top paid wide out in the game.

How quickly things change in the NFL. Only 8 weeks ago people were saying "How could those idiots push a legend out the door? Rodgers sucks, what has he ever done except play one good half vs Dallas and get hurt all the time."

Now, some of those same people are saying: "It's a no brainer to give Rodgers $60 million."

Wow, how quickly opinions change.

As for anonymous saying "anyone could have drafted Rodgers." Really? Didn't 23 teams pass on him? And you're telling me it wasn't bold to draft AR with Brett on the roster?

Ah, screw it. You guys are right. Thompson is the new Matt Millen.

Why not wait until the end of this year to judge how "genius" TT is? We'll see how great dumping one of the greatest QB's to ever live for some mullet wearing dipshit with a piss poor attitude that is made of glass was.

The train is leaving the station get on or shut up?! FUCK YOU DOUCHEBAG.

Go Jet's.

I like how the public opinion here is that anybody could've drafted & signed "these guys", and then the list is like 10 players long. Yes, anyone could've drafted/signed Rodgers, Hawk, Pickett, Woodson, Collins, Bigby, Lee, Jennings, Rouse, and Crosby in 3.5 years. Also, Nelson looks like he could be OK, James Jones will contribute when healthy, and don't forget we added Tramon Williams as an undrafted free agent. That's not a list of player's that too many GM's in football can match in 3 years.

Jennings should get paid like one of the best wide receivers in the league. Rodgers should get paid like a top 5 QB. Those guys are producing at exactly that level, and the "leverage" they have is that waiting too much longer to sign them lets them become free agents. Not good. I'd like to keep those guys.

It's just strange to me that TT gets ripped for drafting Rodgers when we still have the beloved Favre, he gets ripped for "pushing Favre out of town" because Rodgers is "his guy", and then later when all of those moves look fantastic and it's time to resign him it's like, "yeah..big deal, anyone coulda done that." Find 5 teams in football that have added a top 10 QB & WR through the draft since 2005 (Denver, Atlanta if you think Ryan improves in '09, and? The list is pretty short). Woodson has been one of the best free agent signings in recent memory for Green Bay. Can we just agree that Thompson is above average at least?

Right on, Brad.

to clownshiplollypop. have you seen favre this year? hes brutal. they've won games in spite of him. the guy he replaced, pennington, is playing twice as good as brett. brett has been terrible. fucking tyler thigpen outplayed him last week. who the fuck is tyler thigpen? too bad for me, Im a jets fan.

Now that he has a new contract, can we get the networks to replace the official photo of him? It was taken in the spring, when he had long hair. It makes him look like Scott Stapp, and that's not a good thing if you'd like to be taken seriously.
