F it...this is what has to happen

Let's take a look at the schedules of the Brewers and Mets.

Brewers have 9 games left. The Mets have 10.

This weekend at the Launching Pad, the Brewers need to take 2 of 3. The Mets will probably match with 2 out of 3 wins, but for this exercise...let's just say they go 1 for 3. The Brewers then have an off day Monday, while the Mets go play the Cubs. That Monday night, the Cubs will beat the Mets, and with 6 games to go each, we'll be tied.

The Mets play the Cubs 3 more times while we roll into Pittsburgh, whose players have been dying for the offseason the last 3 months so they can get some beach time in. We sweep Pittsburgh, while the North side losers better take 2 out of the next 3 with the Mets.

We have a 2 game lead in the WC (assuming Houston doesn't pull off 7 straight or something...I'm not even factoring that in) then going into the last series. Destiny is controlled. The Cubs are on cruise control...as they eye their postseason starting rotation they rest Z, Harden, & Dempster. We ship 2 out of 3, and get ready to play the Phillies.

Who else thinks this won't happen? It's basically a lock.

To add to this scenario I would prefer the Cubs get swept by the Cards this weekend (1 down, 2 to go) with the Brewers sweeping the Reds (or at the least 2 of 3). I don't want the Cubs magic number to be zero when they play the Mets.

Didn't want to make this it's own post and it doesn't fit here, but I'll put it here any way. From Jason Sobel's Ryder Cup blog on ESPN.com:

5:40 p.m.: Relations have gone from chilly to ice cold in the final match.

Boo Weekley just drilled a birdie from off the green, then did everything but ride the pony Happy Gilmore style, all while getting a stone-cold glare from Westwood.

ha ha ha ha ha

sorry, but ha ha ha ha ha

the problem is the mets aren't going to lose 2 more games than we do. it's just not going to happen.

we pretty much have to win out and hope for the best.

You obviously didn't count the Suppan factor which is 8 runs given up to a horrible team! Surprise, thanks Soup for pitching underhand.

Joey Votto = Albert Pujols
Jay Bruce = A-Rod

This bitch ass crew can walk home!

woz on 5/1:

Cue up the guitar to Tom Petty's "Free Falling..."

Ahem...

"The Cubs are freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....
Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Fallinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggg"

This is why the Cubs can never be considered a serious threat. That game right there. Two things are evidently clear on why the Cubs won't win anything of merit.
-Kerry Wood somehow is pitching the baseball at the end of games.
-The Cubs lack this.

The Cubs score 29 runs in 3 games...and lose 2 out of 3. Enjoy your time at the top Cubs' fans...it's limited.

Boy it must hurt your stomach having to support the Cubs after all the smack you've talked this season. We'll do our best to beat the Mets, and then we'll do our best to beat you up in Milwaukee at the end of the year, and let the chips fall where they may. Cubs are in already!

one more. woz, 3/30:

Now, our very own Brewer Hater Brad stated in his NL Central Preview that there are too many guys in the bullpen that can't be trusted. I reject that viewpoint. I actually consider the bullpen to be the main strength (besides the offense's ability to flat out hit bombs) of this team. I feel a lot more comfortable with veterans like David Riske, Saloman Torres, & Guillermo Mota than Ray King, Matt Wise, & Chris Spurling. I understand everybody's apprehensiveness towards Eric Gagne...I really do. But don't you think that if Mike Maddox can get good seasons out of Mike DeJean, Dan Kolb, & Derrick Turnblow, he can get a quality season out of a former Cy Young Winner? I'm betting on Maddox.

It simply doesnt matter if the Cubs play the Mets or the Brewers, both series will end in a 3-game sweep for Chicago. I suppose, though, they'd rather NY go, simply to rub it in Milwaukee's face.

if the cubs played the brewers, how in the world would it be a three-game sweep? would they cut the nlcs down to a five-game series?

excellent point, otherwise, as always.

Cubs can't play Brewers in the NLDS. Two teams from the same division can't play each other in NLDS, if the Brewers got the Wild Card the Cubs would play the Dodgers and the Phils would play the Brewers, then if the Cubs did play the Brewers in the NLCS the Cubs would have to have a 4 game sweep, in order the sweep.

Of course since it's been a few years since the Brewers were in the playoffs, the rules have changed a lot since 1982.
