ESPN "Expert" - Favre Sucked

ESPN's SalPal didn't think Favre was all that great.

This is taken straight from our friends at Wrigleyville....I'm lazy. SalPal:

Yes, Favre played long enough to throw the most touchdown passes and collect the most wins by an NFL quarterback. But let's examine the second half of No. 4's career. The truth is, Favre did little over the past decade to earn the gushing praise heaped upon him by our fawning brethren in the media.

And:

But no matter how many dumb passes he threw and how many playoff games he lost, Favre remains immune to criticism. Favre isn't even the greatest quarterback in the history of the Packers. It's not even close. Bart Starr won five NFL championships -- four more than Favre -- and retired as the NFL's most accurate passer.

And:

Indeed, a decade after his last moments of glory, the football hype machine continues to paint Favre as a hallowed icon of Americana, a symbol of all that is right with sports, a Wild West gun-slinging good ol' boy. There's Brett on the farm! There's Brett with his family! There's Brett on the cover of Sports Illustrated! There's Brett throwing another overtime interception! Favre was among the best in the game, once upon a time. Those days are long gone. Only the idolatry remains.

Wow. They way he talks, Favre was a glorified Lynn Dickey.

Let's be fair to Sal - the last game he saw of Favre's was the 4th and 26 game in Philly.

Sure, none of Favre's teams made it anywhere in the latter half of his career, but let's examine that a little further shall we?

How many HOFers will be joining Brett from those teams over the last (10) years of his career? *crickets*

That's right, none, zero, nada. Let's examine the other HOF QBs over the last 20 years... Aikman had Emmitt and Irvin, and Novacek as weapons to use... Elway had TD and Shannon Sharpe. Even Montana had a bevy of receivers, Rice & Taylor, and he had Roger Craig to pound it.

Favre had Ahman Green for a couple of years, and with all due respect to the receiving corps, that's about it. Even the Super Bowl year of 96-97 the Packers were more of a defensive squad than an offensive one.

Will Peyton Manning be looked at the same in 10 years when he hangs 'em up should he fail to win a second ring? While I do consider Bart to be 'da man in GB, Brett isn't too shabby. And look at the HOFers that Starr had around him. Had anyone decided to get Brett some weapons... a go to receiver, a dominant running game to take the pressure of the passing game, and a defensive juggernaut like they built that went to SB XXXI and XXXII (and I put all the blame onthe XXXII loss on Holmgren and always have), I have no doubt that Brett would have a handful of rings.

Based on the number of QB's that they have seen, they probably do know more about QB's than us.

I'm going to agree with manbearpig here. I never thought Favre had a great supporting cast. Outside of Sharpe, I would have to think Driver is the second best reciever. Brooks and Freeman were nice players, but nothing special.

What did Favre do to this guy? Angry Viking fan? Was he at the "He did what" game? Or perhaps an angry Bears fan. He could have been at any of a handful of games - perhaps, the Halloween game...

-Loyal Reader, keep it up!

Goldy - I have to agree. After Sharpe he's had Driver and a good Javon for about 1 year. Jennings is a big talent, but Favre only had him for 2 years. Everyone else was made by Favre: Schroeder, Free, Bradford, Chatman, Brooks...nothing special.

Plus, after the SB teams, Favre's defense didn't help him at all...until this year. A better defense in the Rhodes/Sherman days would have won Favre some more games, maybe even more playoff games.
