I Left My Heart In....Bloomington?

The "Cellie" Sampson divorce is final at Indiana University - IU bought out Sampson's contract for $750,000. This is probably a budget-neutral transaction, because the Indiana athletic department will no doubt notice a big drop in its Verizon bill starting this month.

[Update: I just read that an anonymous donor paid $550,000 of the $750,000 buyout. So this will actually be a financial windfall for the university in the long run.]

Now the search is on for a successor. Pat Forde at ESPN.com gives his list, and look who's number 1? Our old pal Tony Bennett, currently performing miracles at Washington State. Tom Crean is nowhere to be seen.

Frankly, I'm surprised that Jerry Tarkanian isn't on this list, given the Indiana University job posting for the position.

Wanted: Head men's basketball coach. Demonstrated success at the Division I level a must. Willing to overlook past transgressions with the NCAA Rules Committee, if you promise to behave yourself. Please send cover letter, resume and salary history to Indiana University, attention: Athletic Director.
