In Doug We Trust
"Ruben Quevedo will not start another game for the Brewers", Melvin said during his introductory press conference.
As we're about to embark on another season of Brewers baseball, I always think it's important to remember where our team was prior to Doug Melvin's arrival in October 2002. I know people have been critical of some of his moves of late, but check out the major league team he inherited (from Baseball Almanac):
2002 Milwaukee Brewers Most Games by Position
C Paul Bako (76)
1B Richie Sexson (154)
2B Eric Young (123)
3B Tyler Houston (72)
SS Jose Hernandez (149)
LF Geoff Jenkins (66)
CF Alex Sanchez (86)
RF Alex Ochoa (61)
SP Ruben Quevedo
SP Glendon Rusch
SP Ben Sheets
SP Jamey Wright
RP Mike Buddie
RP Valerio de los Santos
RP Jayson Durocher
RP Ray King
RP Takahito Nomura
RP Luis Vizcaino
CL Mike DeJean
I know that he also inherited some nice prospects (Prince, Corey Hart, etc.), but the team as a whole has been built through the draft after he got here, and through some astute trades and free agent signings.
Who knows what the 2008 season will bring, but we can all be confident that it will be significantly more exciting than 2002 was.
