This from ESPN's Jayson Stark:
Talks between the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers about third baseman Scott Rolen have cooled because, according to one source who spoke with the two teams, the Cardinals are hesitant to trade Rolen within the division.
The teams were talking about a deal that would have sent Rolen to Milwaukee for pitcher Chris Capuano and a top prospect. The Brewers also would have paid all of the $33 million in salary Rolen is owed over the next three years, while the Cardinals would have assumed the $14 million in deferred salary and what remained of Rolen's $5 million signing bonus.
When the two teams arrived at the winter meetings, a trade seemed imminent. However, one source familiar with the discussions said he now believes it's more unlikely than likely that that trade will get finalized.
In the meantime, the Cardinals are talking with the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers about Rolen. And it's possible, though not probable, that they could complete a deal with one of those teams before the meetings end Thursday.

I bet Braun is disapointed. Now he can't play in the 8th and 9th innings again...
Now might be time to turn the attention to Hank Blalock, missing rib or not.
You think they want Mench back?
I think Blalock would come at a steeper player price than Rolen. Blalock is only 27, 5 years younger than Rolen, but along with the rib issue, he had off-season shoulder surgery last year.
Yes, I agree it will take more than Capuano. Although it would be nice to ship Mench back to Texas as a piece of the deal.
Blalock also has a smaller price tag. Is he a good defender? And by good, I mean good. Not just better than Braun.
Tony just relayed to me he was listening to Chicago 670 and herd them mentioned Joe Crede possibly to the Brewers.
He was very good two years ago...only played 47 games last year. Only made $5 mil last year.
Crede had a back injury last year too, no? Pass.
awesome, you have made the big time. Only the best blogs get spammed. WOOHOO!
Baxter, you know I don't speak Spanish!
Did he just say he pooped in the refigerator and ate the whole wheel of cheese?
I think he said he wants Rueben Quevedo back.
wrigleyville always gets gambling sites spamming our comments. at least yours is intereting.
wtf? We can't drop a couple extra mil for CoCo but we can $33 million for a 3rd baseman with one shoulder?
