Jeffrey Suppan = Jeffrey Hammonds?

All sorts of nuggets from last nights game:

Jeffrey Suppan = Jeffrey Hammonds? Not quite, but it’s not looking good for our $40+ million man. 8-9, 5.08 ERA. Ouch. Is he hiding an injury or something? His last 8 or 9 starts have been BRUTAL.

Kyle Lohse: 5-12 entering last night…doesn’t matter.

Matthew Wise drills a guy in the grill. I’m looking for a fight in today’s game. He then gives up a double, double, ball game over.

What’s with JJ? Two days off in a row?

WTF was that botched hit and run, delayed steal, whatever that was in the 8th?? Ugly. That inning highlighted why the Brewers won’t make the playoffs. Bases loaded, no outs, they put nothing on the board. A big, fat goose egg.

Scott Linebrink…great pickup.

Whoever stole a Brewer ball and glove logo magnet off a TrailBlazer in lot 43 on the UW campus, I want it back! Bastard.

Originally I was going to be critical of Yost's lineup/tactics, but then i remembered how good everyone said he was, so I will instead praise him.

It takes balls-big,bouncy balls-to put that lineup on the field. It says to the Cubs, "We're so confident our team is better, that we'll sit some of our best players on consecutive nights." I'm sure the Cubs will be responding by sitting Lee&Soriano the rest of the week.

Also, I was not timing it at home, but I am forced to assume that Weathers' pop time had risen so spectacularly that it became prudent to attempt a double steal/hit&run with two of your fattest on base and captain contact at the plate. I did notice Ed Cedar timing DW w/ an egg timer, so I am OK with "being aggressive" in that spot but not the night before w/ Gwynn or Weeks. In the end, the onus is on Mench to be able to steal home in that situation. He simply didn't execute. (BTW, when was the last time that little league delayed steal worked?)

In finality, I thought Yost did a good job of keeping Balfour out of the game. And though the lineup was definitely "JV", it did appear that he managed to fill out the card correctly. Kudos.

Speaking of free agent signings...

Ted Lilly is now 11-4 after winning seven straight decisions.

May want to revisit some of the things written about him here.

Cardinals remain 9 back. Beware.

W-Ville, were you overly excited by the Lilly signing? Did you predict he would be 11-4? If you did, kudos. If not, you're just like us and the rest of the baseball world on that signing.

Whoever gets dotted this afternoon can thank Matty Wise for that head shot last night. I personally hope they hit Ponch right in his boiler!

I thought it was funny last night listening to "The Rock" talk about how at least it was only a change-up. Boys- getting drilled in the melon 75mph or 95 mph-Im sorry there isnt that much of a difference.

To Wise's credit he did look extremely remorseful(Saying "Goddamit..my bad!" To the home plate umpire as he walked up to Matt and gave him a new ball.) Or was it just an act? Cause he knew when he got back to the dugout everyone on the crew would be scowling at him knowing they could be the next one to get a drilling. Cinci cant let that go unanswered-even though it was an accident.

One more thing I noticed- they showed Peter Rose stuffing his face with a burger and brewskie last night while in attendance at the game. I wonder if he had any sweet action on the game?

I wrote this on 12/16, so no, I never specifically said he would be 11-4...

Specifically, he's talking about Ted Lilly - and the complaints that he's not Jason Schmidt or Barry Zito. No, he's not. But that's OK. Schmidt wasn't going to come to Chicago, by all accounts, and Zito appears determined to go to New York or someplace where he will be paid $100 million (and that's not necessarily the same place). Given that, Ted Lilly is a nice consolation prize - one that I predict will finish with 16 wins and an ERA south of 4.00.

That's my first prediction of 2007 - two weeks early.

OK, I'll give you props for that. You want to trade him for Suppan? Ha.

wv23 said...

Never. Suppan was on my fantasy team a couple of years ago - and even when he's going well, I thought he was a bit of a dog...

I think the situation was 1st & 3rd w/ 0 outs last night, Brad. The bases loaded 0-'fer against Weathers was Monday night.

We've had bases loaded w/ 0 outs & 2 outs (Monday) and runners on 1st & 3rd w/ 0 outs & 1 out (last night)and we've come up with 0 runs. All of these situations were VS. David Weathers.

.....but you're point is still correct. Situations like that are killing this road trip.

Ah, I see. Admittedly, I didnt get to watch the game all that closely last night. Whatever it was, it was a debacle.

Why do I get excited for this garbage every year? Its slowly slipping away.. All my hopes and dreams of listening to McCarver and Buck in mid Oct at Miller Park are fading fast.

Guess I will just have to watch Jetes, Pettite, and Roger for the 10th year in a row.

What about the trade? Most of Melvin's trades have looked like winners right out of the box. This one, not so much. Inman was the top pitching prospect in the minors and Garrison is coming on. Hope this doesn't turn out like the Pierzynski for Liriano, Bonser and Nathan trade. I guess Thatcher is going straight to Saint Diego. However the other two could become nobodies. Seems like what sold Melvin on this was the two top draft picks. Must have a lot of faith in Jack Z to be able to select guys of Inman and Garrison's quality. I have not looked yet, but can only imagine Brewerfan hates this trade. Some over there are always more about tomorrow than today.

Now Wrigleyville, if you had a post from December talking about how Gil Meche would have a great year, then you would be on to something!

If we don't resign Linebrink & lose him to free agency after this year, we will should get a conditional pick out of it. That should appease the Brewerfan folks.....

Goldy -

No such luck on Meche. From 12/7:

"KC Royals: Making No Sense

Gil Meche...

Five years. Um, OK.

$45 million. If you say so.

Kansas City Royals. What?!?

The Royals, who actually seemed to be building something of a base in Mark Teahan, Ryan Shealy and Alex Gordon, just committed $45 million to Gil Meche. Gil Meche! Their total 2006 payroll was $47.3 million. He will be the second highest paid player on the team.

It's one thing for the Cubs or the Yankees or the Red Sox to overpay for such a player, but the Royals? He won't get them many, if any, more wins - and fans won't be traveling from throughout the Midwest to see Gil Meche pitch every five days.

Update: It's actually $55 million?"

I like Brewerfan as a source of info about what is going on in the minor leagues. However, I must have missed the post about Oxspring going to Korea. Anyhow, I think a lot of people over there were not too disappointed with the Sheets injury because it gave Parra a shot. They seem to overlook today (a good season this year) for the future (a 4 year dynasty).
My thought is, yes, the Brewers are set up well for the future, but if you have the shot now, you have to go for it and enjoy this year.
It's like that with Wisconsin basketball as well. Everyone was like, "wait until Butch and Steimsma start playing" Well, they are decent, but in reality, UWs best title shot was Harris last year. If Alando wasn't injured, they would have been tough. Boo could shut down anyone on D and Wilkenson and Morely could score up front.

Keeping up with the minor leagues is cool (I am wering my Brevard County hat as I type this) but if the big club goes to the playoffs every year, I couldn't care less if our rookies never win another game. Plus, our A, AA, & AAA teams are all in 1st place (last I checked), so I'm OK with a little "profit taking" from the minors and aquiring "actual" MLB players. God news Balfour being sent down for Linebrink would equal addition by subtraction.

Agree Goldy. Have to go for it right now. Who know if next year the Cardinals rebuild, or Houston gets better, and you know the Cubs will spend more money. Get it done now!

I was actually formulating a post about this very topic.
