Former Milwaukee Braves and Milwaukee Brewers broadcaster Merle Harmon passed away today at the age of 82. Unfortunately I never was able to here Merle call a game. His last season with the Brewers I was 2, so I am sure I probably heard one of his game calls, it just hasn't stuck with me over these past 30 years. By all accounts, he was a very good broadcaster.
What I, and I am pretty sure most of us, remember Merle for is Merle Harmon's Fan Fair. I freakin loved that place. The Fan Fair at the Regency Mall was awesome. It was the place to get sports clothes in the pre-internet age. Heck, I even got my photo with Tim Harris there. They also were a great help in my attempt to find a Dallas Mavericks starter jacket. This was when the Mavericks had the old ball with the M with the cowboy hat logo and Jimmy Jackson, Jamal Mashburn and Jason Kidd were fighting over Toni Braxton. After a week of calling around, it was determined that this jacket wasn't made, but I think they made a solid effort in helping find me one. I did end up with a sweet Mavs Mashburn jersey. Not as great as my Warriors Mullin or Dream Team Mullin jersey, but sweet nonetheless.
So Merle Harmon, I salute you.
