K bye Claudio...

...good luck with all your future endeavors.

Ned & Doug called me at work and told me they were taking my advice and getting rid of Vargas, I just didn't expect them to tell me they got nothing in return.

Reader Highplaya wants to know why he wasn't traded for a low prospect or a double A pitcher.

Brad just emailed me and asked why they couldn't get at least a few crates of big league chew.

Really? Just release him?? Release a proven 4th or 5th starter just like that???

Is Melvin telling us he couldn't pry away the Devil Rays rookie ball shortstop...or the Royal's single A backup LF...or Crash Davis & $125K in cash?

WTF?

You forgot one important component to any trade - Vargas isn't a very good pitcher.

Last year we traded Ball four for McClung. I would think we could get something for an established major league pitcher who is only 29 years old. And Vargas is much better than some of the chumps we sent to the mound in past years.

Actually, two important components. He isn't very good, and he would have made $3.6 million this year.

You better believe somebody will pick him up now because as you say he is an established major league pitcher, but they'll do so at their price and without the need to trade a prospect for him. I bet Melvin tried to trade him before releasing him.

WTF? is right. Where did all this Vargas love come from? I'm with Matt, I am sure Doug being Doug tried to get at least a bag of balls for him but the contract and the fact he isn't that good kept getting in the way. in closing, In Doug I trust.

Kind of makes that Doug Davis trade look not so great now....

Wasn't it now essentially Davis, Krynzel, & Eveland (possibly in Oakland's rotation) for Mota, 1 year of crappy Estrada and a departed Vargas? In Doug I trust too, but my confidence in that is a bit shaken lately.......

Doesn't it seem like the majority of our pitching staff isn't worth a sack of BP balls in a trade?
