Brewer Breakdown - First Base

The first in a series of Brewer breakdowns as spring training approaches. The big fella Prince Fielder seems to have this position locked down for as long as he wants….or as long as his body will let him.

The Good: Not quite 23 years old, the beefy slugger hit a solid .271 with 28 bombs and 81 ribbies in his first full year as a starter. Things should only get better with age as Prince has BIG TIME potential as a cleanup hitter. .290-35-115 should not only happen sooner rather than later, it’s almost expected. His glove was better than advertised and the big boy even stole 7 bases!

The Bad: His weight. Although still pretty nimble, he’s a couple of biscuits shy of Reuben Studdard. Long term, many believe Fielder has “DH” written all over him. You think he’s big now, imagine what he will look like at age 29 or 30? Can you say “Mo Vaughn?” Also keep in mind that Fielder’s average dropped significantly after the Carlos Lee trade. Lee is a much more worthy protector in the lineup than Billy Hall.

2007 Prediction: .273, 33 hrs, 97 RBIs.

Grade: B If you are the primary (only?) run producer for a team trying to make the playoff, you would like him to be in the 115-120 RBI range. Prince isn’t there….yet.
